Google Cloud's unprecedented growth requires capacity planning and management. The Cloud Capacity Management Engineering (CCME) team autonomously and reliably allocates Google Compute Engine (GCE) capacity to deliver a delightful customer experience while maximizing fleet efficiency.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will define the multi-year technical goals and architectural strategy for the ODM team and across our capacity management ecosystem. You will serve as the tech lead for a high impact and high visibility team, setting the standards for system design and reliability, navigating trade-offs across competing organizational priorities, and mentoring a talented team of engineers. You will grow in ambiguity, drive technical and business-outcome focused alignment across cross-functional partner teams (SWE, data science, capacity planners, etc.), with a high bar for engineering excellence.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.US: $207000 - $300000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities
- Define and execute multi-year strategies and technical roadmaps for the optimal decision making (ODM) team.
- Act as the primary Tech Lead for the ODM team (~12 SWEs L3-L5), establishing clear architectural boundaries, scalable abstractions, and resilient systems while making technical contributions and designs.
- Collaborate with various capacity management and planning teams to identify shared efficiency opportunities while keeping the ecosystem reliable.
- Mentor and elevate a high-performing team of L3-L5 software engineers, delegating high-complexity sub-systems and coaching them through system design and execution.
- Advoacte engineering best practices, driving continuous improvements in development velocity, telemetry, and system maintainability.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience programming in C++, Java, Python, Kotlin or Go.
- 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products.
- 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
- Experience integrating generative AI tools or LLM interfaces into workflows.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Operations Research, or a related technical field.
- Background in mathematical optimization, constraint solvers (linear programming/mixed-integer programming (LP/MIP)), simulation, or large-scale data pipelines.
- Industry experience in capacity planning, cloud resource allocation, supply chain modeling, or fleet management systems.
- Experience leading and growing medium-to-large engineering teams. Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Passion for delivering impact in an enterprise-facing and customer-facing environment.
- Experience with distributed systems and highly scalable and reliable systems/cloud services.
