Graphcore is a British semiconductor company founded in Bristol in 2016 that designs the Intelligence Processing Unit, a processor architected specifically for machine learning rather than adapted from graphics. Its chips place large amounts of memory directly on the die and expose fine-grained parallelism, an approach aimed at sparse and irregular models that map poorly onto conventional accelerators. The company sells IPU systems and the Poplar software stack to research and enterprise customers, and has operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of SoftBank Group since its acquisition in 2024.

About the job

Expose manufacturing defects in Graphcore’s advanced circuit boards with tests you build and deploy.

Based in Bristol, UK, you’ll develop board and PCBA hardware tests that help turn complex designs into reliable products. You’ll take tests from initial design analysis to deployment, then support them in factories and the field.

Better defect coverage means more opportunities to identify manufacturing problems and understand hardware failures when products are in use. You’ll help make test and inspection methods work together, targeting the ways advanced electronic assemblies can go wrong.

You’ll examine PCB testability and susceptibility to manufacturing defects, then use that analysis to define and develop test solutions. You’ll build boundary scan and embedded functional tests, turning your understanding of board behaviour into practical diagnostic tools.

The team and culture

The Product Test and Diagnosis team tackles hardware defects across chips, boards and finished systems. You’ll work directly with Hardware Design, Manufacturing Operations and contract electronics manufacturers, connecting design knowledge with factory experience.

Use evidence to guide test decisions, challenge gaps in coverage and take responsibility for moving improvements forward. Move quickly from diagnosis to action, bringing the right people together to resolve hardware problems.

What we're looking for

  • Strong electronics fundamentals, particularly digital electronics.
  • Commercial experience in board or PCBA hardware testing.
  • Understanding of manufacturing test for advanced electronic systems.
  • Knowledge of surface-mount technology (SMT), PCB manufacturing processes and their failure mechanisms.
  • Understanding of automated optical inspection (AOI) and automated X-ray inspection (AXI) capabilities.
  • Ability to diagnose electronic defects to component level.

While we have outlined a set of requirements, we value transferable skills and diverse experiences. We also welcome engineers returning to the profession after a career break, including through returnship routes.
