Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Lead AI & Automation Engineer to lead and actively contribute to a cross-functional Automation & AI engineering team supporting:

• Data Center and Compute
• Network Infrastructure
• Cyber Security and Security Operations
• End User Services, Workplace, Citrix and Service Desk The role combines technical leadership, solution architecture and hands-on engineering. The successful candidate will establish common engineering standards, manage the automation backlog, guide technical decisions and ensure that automation and AI solutions are delivered securely, reliably and with measurable business value. The team’s scope includes infrastructure automation, AI-assisted operations, self-service, observability, intelligent remediation, workflow orchestration and integration across Microsoft technologies, Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, ServiceNow and domain-specific platforms. The Data Center engineer role covers Compute, Storage, Backup, Azure Local, Hybrid Cloud, Infrastructure-as-Code, observability and automated operational workflows. The Network engineer role covers Aruba, Palo Alto, AIOps, network Infrastructure-as-Code, monitoring, configuration compliance and self-healing operations. The Security engineer role covers Microsoft security technologies, ServiceNow Security Operations, Red Hat Ansible, incident response, vulnerability management and compliance automation. The End User Services engineer role covers Microsoft workplace platforms, Citrix, Intune, Entra ID, Copilot Studio, ServiceNow and employee self-service

Key Responsibilities

Role Purpose The Lead AI & Automation Engineer will turn automation opportunities into governed, reusable and production-ready solutions. The role will:

• Provide technical direction to the Automation & AI engineering team.
• Maintain a common backlog and delivery approach across technology domains.
• Personally design, build, test and deploy complex automations.
• Establish reusable patterns for integrations, approvals, logging, security, monitoring and exception handling.
• Ensure that solutions are properly owned, documented, maintained and measured after deployment.
• Connect operational requirements with architecture, security, service management and business objectives.
• Develop the engineers’ technical capability through coaching, pairing and design reviews.
• Demonstrate realised value through improved quality, reduced manual effort, faster delivery and lower operational risk. ________________________________________ Key Responsibilities 1. Technical Leadership
• Provide day-to-day technical leadership for AI and automation engineers.
• Set a clear technical direction across Data Center, Network, Security and End User Services.
• Translate strategic objectives into an actionable engineering roadmap.
• Allocate work based on priority, technical complexity, dependencies and available engineering skills.
• Facilitate architecture reviews, design reviews, code reviews and technical workshops.
• Coach engineers in automation design, secure development, testing and production support.
• Promote collaboration and reuse between infrastructure domains.
• Identify technical blockers and coordinate their resolution.
• Maintain a balance between quick wins, foundational platform work and strategic automation.
• Support recruitment, onboarding and technical development of team members.
• Create an environment where engineers can experiment safely and convert successful prototypes into supported production services. 2. Hands-On Engineering Contribution The role is expected to remain technically active and contribute directly to delivery. Responsibilities include:
• Design and build complex automation and AI solutions.
• Develop production-quality code, scripts, workflows, playbooks and integrations.
• Create reusable libraries, templates, modules and reference implementations.
• Lead technically complex or cross-domain automation initiatives.
• Troubleshoot failed workflows, integration issues and production incidents.
• Build proofs of concept for new automation and AI capabilities.
• Convert successful proofs of concept into secure and supportable production solutions.
• Support engineers through pair programming and hands-on problem solving.
• Contribute to release planning, testing, deployment and operational handover.
• Maintain expertise in the team’s core platforms and engineering practices. The team’s engineering base includes PowerShell, Python, Ansible, Terraform, REST APIs, Git and CI/CD methods across the various domain roles. 3. Automation Architecture and Standards
• Define the target architecture for enterprise AI and automation services.
• Establish common patterns for: o Authentication and authorisation o Secrets and certificate handling o API integrations o Workflow approvals o Human-in-the-loop controls o Error handling and retries o Logging and telemetry o Monitoring and alerting o Rollback and recovery o Audit trails o Source control o Testing and release management
• Define when to use Power Automate, Copilot Studio, Azure Automation, Red Hat Ansible, ServiceNow workflows, scripts or Infrastructure-as-Code.
• Prevent unnecessary duplication of automation capabilities.
• Ensure solutions are modular, reusable and supportable.
• Maintain architectural decision records and technical standards.
• Review exceptions to standards and document associated risks. 4. Automation Portfolio and Backlog Management
• Establish and maintain a single, transparent automation backlog.

Required Qualifications Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience. Experience
• Significant experience in enterprise automation, AI engineering, infrastructure engineering, platform engineering or service automation.
• Experience leading engineers or providing technical leadership within a cross-functional team.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience delivering production automation solutions.
• Experience working across more than one infrastructure or IT service domain.
• Experience designing integrations between enterprise platforms.
• Experience establishing engineering standards and governance.
• Experience managing automation backlogs and technical roadmaps.
• Experience operating in complex, global enterprise environments.
• Experience explaining technical decisions, risks and value to senior stakeholders.
