Hitachi is a Japanese conglomerate founded in 1910 by Namihei Odaira as an electrical repair shop inside a copper mine, which grew into one of the country's largest industrial groups. After a decade of restructuring it now concentrates on digital systems and services, green energy and mobility, selling grid equipment through Hitachi Energy, trains and signalling through Hitachi Rail, and storage and data platforms through Hitachi Vantara. Its Lumada portfolio ties operational technology to software, and the 2021 acquisition of GlobalLogic gave the group a large digital engineering arm serving customers outside Japan.

The opportunity

Empower the Future with Hitachi Energy: Join us as a Scientist in Physics of Failure & Reliability and apply first-principles thinking and scientific methods to develop innovative reliability engineering approaches that contribute to the success of a technology-driven company.

We are looking for a passionate and proficient scientist to join us in reliability research for power grid assets and systems. As part of our dynamic, motivated, and creative team, you will bridge theory and application through experimental research, developing, designing, testing, and validating novel methods and technologies to understand degradation mechanisms and improve the reliability of future power grid assets.

How you'll make an impact

  • You drive impact: Lead and contribute to cross-functional projects by focusing on the underlying physics of failure, ensuring that reliability enhancements for power grid assets are grounded in a deep understanding of how application stresses translate into real-world failure mechanisms. Design and execute experiments to investigate degradation and failure mechanisms under realistic operating conditions

  • You innovate: Proactively seek out emerging knowledge in failure physics and develop novel experimental approaches to validate scientific hypotheses and improve system reliability, keeping the team at the cutting edge of reliability science and its practical applications

  • You take initiative: Collaborate with a global team of researchers and engineers in Hitachi Energy Research and Hitachi Energy business units. Help identify and solve real-world problems, inspire opportunities for further improvement, and contribute to accelerating the implementation of innovative technologies

  • You connect: Build relationships within the company and actively share your knowledge and expertise

  • You communicate: Disseminate your results through scientific publications, patent applications, and technical reports

Your background

  • PhD in experimental physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field

  • Expertise in physics of failure, failure investigation, root-cause analysis, and reliability modeling, combined with strong data analysis skills and accurate interpretation of results

  • Hands-on experience in designing and conducting experiments, developing test methods, and using advanced materials characterization techniques to investigate degradation and failure mechanisms

  • Industry or post-doctoral experience in energy technology or related industries such as automotive, rail, aerospace, or telecommunications, with a focus on product reliability improvements, is a plus

  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken
