Reliability Technician

Role:
The role supports maintenance teams in resolving longer-term equipment problems and proactively preventing recurring failures, with a focus on improving machine reliability, performance and throughput. The role provides hands-on technical and reliability support through equipment performance analysis, structured problem solving, root cause analysis, condition monitoring, breakdown support and equipment improvement initiatives.
The core responsibilities include:
- Critical analysis of systems and their performance to eliminate repetitive defects and to enhance overall asset reliability
- To learn and be a key custodian of problem solving and tracking in the department you are assigned to
- To identify, investigate, motivate, and implement changes related to the safe and effective performance of the various machine centres.
- To work closely with the departmental maintenance planner to ensure that equipment reliability tasks are programmed into the CMMS (checks and inspections).
- To provide support to the department’s maintenance team, especially in the event of significant breakdowns
- To have an active management role during outages, assisting the maintenance team in managing the shut workload
- To maintain a level of machine expertise, ensuring that equipment/system obsolescence issues are dealt with timeously
- Complete failure analyses on all breakdowns and planned corrective maintenance
- Generates a monthly top ten failures report and action plan to rectify in O.P.P. format
- Does basic RCA on problem areas and proposes Preventative or Predictive Maintenance Schedules
- Identifies training needs and training providers to improve the skill base and mentor apprentices or trainee Technicians.
- Project manage small projects related to their investigations
- Remaining in touch with technology and advise on improvements with current systems
- Performs standby duty in the plant to ensure that downtime is managed and minimise
Desired Experience & Qualification
The required competencies and abilities include:
- The minimum requirement is a National Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical); a BTech or Degree would be an added advantage
- At least minimum of five years’ experience in the manufacturing environment
- Root cause analysis and fault-finding experience
- Equipment capability and maintenance knowledge and experience
- Excellent computer skills (Excel, Maximo/SAP, Word, etc.), report writing skills and presentation skills
- The ability to co-ordinate maintenance tasks, shutdowns and project work
- The ability to work in a manufacturing team and interface with all members of the team
- Report-writing and presentation skills
- Ability to coordinate maintenance, shutdown and project activities
- Effective communication and relationship-building skills
- Attention to detail, tenacity and perseverance
- Strong focus on quality and work standards
