Job Description:

Health & Safety Specialist

Huntsman is seeking a Health & Safety Specialist supporting the Advanced Materials Division located in Ashtabula, Ohio. This position will report to the Ashtabula EHS Manager.

Job Scope

Lead and continuously improve the site's occupational safety, industrial hygiene, medical surveillance, and emergency response programs. Support site compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company EHS requirements through internal and external audits, inspections, and compliance initiatives. Lead incident investigations, facilitate risk assessments, support Process Safety Management initiatives, and maintain site EHS programs, training, documentation, and compliance activities.

In summary, as the Health & Safety Specialist, you will:

  • Lead and continuously improve the site's occupational safety, industrial hygiene, medical surveillance, and emergency response programs.
  • Support site compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company EHS requirements through internal and external audits, inspections, and compliance initiatives.
  • Lead incident investigations, including conducting root cause analyses (RCAs), tracking corrective actions, and facilitating communication of lessons learned across the site and Huntsman organization.
  • Facilitate Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, and Safe Work Procedure development to proactively identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Support Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and Process Safety Management (PSM) initiatives to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  • Facilitate Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) activities for EHS and operational projects.
  • Audit and provide guidance on safe work permits, including hot work, confined space entry, lockout/tagout (LOTO), excavation, work at height, and other high-risk work activities.
  • Maintain the facility contractor safety orientation and qualification process and support contractor safety compliance initiatives.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain site EHS procedures, programs, records, and documentation.
  • Maintain site EHS regulatory training matrices and ensure timely completion of required employee and contractor training.
  • Conduct new employee orientation and deliver ongoing EHS training, competency assessments, and testing for employees and contractors.
  • Assist with site, visitor, contractor, and employee safety onboarding and training activities.
  • Facilitate and coordinate the Safety Committee, SIMS (Ergonomics) Committee, Zero Harm Committee, and other employee engagement initiatives.
  • Track, analyze, and report site EHS performance metrics, including Zero Harm, PSM, employee hours, contractor hours, and other leading and lagging indicators.
  • Maintain facility PPE policies and procedures, including ownership of PPE uniform programs and safety equipment management.
  • Manage site security guard services and support facility security programs.
  • Perform other projects and duties as assigned.
  • Manage assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision by demonstrating strong self-management, accountability, and timely execution of work. Escalate issues and seek supervisory support when appropriate to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.
  • Collaborate with and support other employees in achieving Huntsman’s business and operational objectives.
  • Participate in and successfully complete all required company training programs.
  • Actively support and participate in Huntsman Environmental, Health, Safety, Security, and Sustainability (EHSS) programs, initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.

Qualifications

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.

The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required for all jobs. One year of relevant experience may typically be substituted for one year of formal education.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupation Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Chemical/Industrial Engineering or Other related technical discipline
  • 3+ years and or may be substituted with
  • 5+ years Health and Safety experience at a chemical facility.

Skills and knowledge

  • Must have a good level of understanding of applicable federal regulations and Huntsman EHS procedures.
  • Must be able to lead teams and facilitate efficient team meetings.
  • Selected candidate must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and be capable of making group presentations as well as the individual skills to effectively interface with management, production operators and professional people in H/S/E, manufacturing and outside agencies.
  • Experience with conducting safety training programs is desired.
  • Selected candidate must be available 24/7 to respond to emergencies and walk and climb stairs as needed to interact within the production facility.
  • Selected candidate will have strong computer skills and be comfortable utilizing Microsoft Office, Outlook, and other required software.
  • Selected candidate must have demonstrable experience as a self-starter that can perform and complete their duties with minimal supervision and set and achieve challenging goals and perform problem solving that leads to solutions that deliver success.
  • Communicates tactfully and effectively both verbally and in writing, and maintains effective work relations with those encountered during the course of employment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to new instructions and/or dynamic organizational priorities is critical for job success.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASP or relevant professional certification (or willingness to become certified) is valued.
