Thermal Analyst
Mechanical Engineer II
NASA Glenn Research Center
Brook Park, Ohio
HX5 is an award-winning provider of engineering, research and development, and technical services to clients such as NASA and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran and woman-owned company with locations nationwide.
HX5 is currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer/Thermal Analyst to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
A Thermal Analyst is needed to support NASA’s Glenn Research Center as a principal researcher in the area of advanced additive manufactured (AM) heat exchangers. The advent of AM and novel material systems has unlocked highly complex, previously un-manufacturable heat exchanger geometries such as gyroids and triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS); however modern engineers lack the foundational correlations required to reliably benchmark, analyze, and optimize these next-generation AM geometries. The Thermal Analyst will define rigorous experimental protocols to systematically characterize the critical performance factors across a wide matrix of variables; culminating in an extensive repository of empirical data published in a definitive modern reference text.
The Thermal Analyst will also work toward establishing a rapid, novel system design methodology tailored for next-generation heat exchangers in hybrid-electric propulsion architectures; utilizing Python-based scripts and AI-driven automation techniques in conjunction with industry-standard analysis codes such as Ansys, Thermal Desktop, and nTop to significantly compress design iterations.
Required Experience:
Ability to perform hands-on laboratory research in thermal and flow systems.
Proficient with fundamental analytical calculations for heat transfer and fluid flow.
Familiarity with or ability to learn heat exchanger sizing techniques using fundamental analytical calculations.
Proficient with thermal analysis codes (i.e. Thermal Desktop, Ansys, nTop).
Familiarity with or ability to learn rapid prototyping of heat exchangers using modern manufacturing methods (i.e. additive manufacturing, prototyping machine shops).
Familiarity with or ability to learn open-source thermal codes.
Familiarity with or ability to learn with artificial intelligence tools for engineering design (i.e. NASA chat, chat GSFS, Microsoft Copilot, Mission AI Hub).
Experience with Python coding desired but not required.
Ability to perform hands-on laboratory research in thermal and flow systems.
Education/Experience:
Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree from ABET accredited program with the following education and experience:
- Bachelor's degree and two (2) to five (5) years of relevant experience
- Master’s degree and zero (0) to three (3) years of relevant experience
Other Position Requirements:
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship
- Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation
