Engineering Intern, Full Stack Software

Job Purpose

The Engineering Intern, Full Stack Software will support Hyliion's full stack software team in developing and maintaining the applications, middleware, and databases that support Hyliion's strategic initiatives. Working alongside experienced software engineers, the intern will gain hands-on exposure to the full software development lifecycle, from design and implementation through testing and support. Assignments may span front-end and back-end development using Vue.js and Node.js, database work in PostgreSQL and KQL, and data API integration. The intern will participate in the team's Agile development processes and build practical, real-world software engineering experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with the development and maintenance of full-stack applications using Vue.js, Node.js, or similar JavaScript frameworks.
• Support the design and implementation of database solutions using PostgreSQL and/or KQL.
• Assist with integrating and managing data APIs with a focus on user security.
• Implement assigned features and fixes across both front-end and back-end environments.
• Assist with creating and performing integration testing and help troubleshoot and identify root causes of software issues.
• Document code, features, and test results for assigned work.
• Participate in Agile development processes.
• Collaborate with the full stack team and other engineering teams to support integration, testing, and delivery.
• Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, needed, or required for the business.

Qualifications include:

• Education, Experience and Certifications
• Currently working towards a bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• No prior work experience is required, but a strong understanding of relevant software development concepts, demonstrated through coursework, school projects, and/or personal projects, is required.

• Skills and Abilities
• Understanding of fundamental software engineering principles.
• Coursework or project exposure to JavaScript and web application development; experience with Vue.js, Node.js, or Express.js preferred.
• Coursework or project exposure to relational databases and SQL; familiarity with PostgreSQL preferred.
• Coursework or project exposure to API design and integration.
• Familiarity with Azure Cloud tools, including Azure IoT and Azure Data Explorer (ADX), preferred.
• Familiarity with Agile development practices.
• Ability to troubleshoot and identify root causes of software issues.
• Collaborative, with a willingness to learn and adapt to evolving technologies and project requirements.
• Self-starter with strong follow-through and personal ownership of assigned work.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Clear oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions.

Role Classification and Working Conditions

This is an hourly, non-exempt-level position. This position typically works in an office environment; and given the nature of our business is also exposed to operations/warehouses/production environments.
