Purpose

The position of Senior Field Engineer (Telecoms) is positioned within the Telecoms function of SP Energy Networks. In this role you will provide effective support on the planning, delivery and cost effectiveness of the Operational Telecom infrastructure to the Strategic Telecom Manager. You will act as the delivery authority, supporting the planning of designs on behalf of internal customers liaising with Telecom service providers to deliver their business requirements.

Required to Project and Delivery manage Telecom projects for Adds, Moves and Changes to Strategic Telecoms networks, services must be delivered to customers on time and by the ‘Request for Service’ date prior to being handed to the Operations and Maintenance function completed to levels set by the Design & Standards function.

We are looking for individuals with experience in managing a Utility sector internal operational Telecom network, with proven experience and expert knowledge. You will also possess good inter-personal and communication skills with the ability to form effective working relationships with other departments and businesses.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will support SP Energy Networks' Operational Excellence goals and wider business objectives, ensuring that Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality (HSSEQ) standards are consistently achieved in all activities.

  • Delivery Management

You will play a key role in overseeing the safe and effective delivery of Telecommunications projects and operational activities. This will include reviewing site safety arrangements and safe working practices adopted by SPEN Telecoms Contractors, assessing project plans to ensure baseline programmes are realistic and achievable, and providing work instructions to Contractors. You will monitor and review build and civil engineering activities to ensure all work is completed to the required standards.

You will also review and approve CHG requests, ensuring associated activities are completed to the appropriate standard, validate network records, rack and floor diagrams where required, and review end-of-job documentation to confirm it aligns with project scope and delivery requirements.

Successful delivery of these responsibilities will be supported through regular site visits and audits.

  • Project Management

Working closely with customers, you will help develop and maintain an excellent customer experience, responding to requests in a timely manner while ensuring project delivery remains achievable and aligned with agreed project plans and customer expectations.

You will engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders across projects and programmes of work to drive successful delivery. This includes collaboration with desk-based Engineers within Engineering & Design (E&D) and Design & Solutions (D&S), OTNOM and OTP Contractor resources, end customers, District colleagues, and wider SP Energy Networks teams such as RTS and Cyber. A key aspect of the role will be coordinating with field-based resources to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and within budget.

In addition, you will assist with forecasting and reporting activities, supporting the identification and preparation of budgets and helping to maintain accurate CAPEX and OPEX expenditure against project, task and activity budgets. You will also be responsible for managing the field service provision required to support operational telecommunications requirements.

What you’ll bring

To be successful in this role, you will hold a degree level qualification, or equivalent, in a relevant technical discipline such as Electrical, Electronic or Telecommunications Engineering.

With proven experience in Project Management, alongside a strong technical background in IP networking technologies, including LAN, WAN and Firewall environments, you will be proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with experience in using Visio and Microsoft Project. Experience working with operational Telecommunications networks is also essential.

Possessing a solid understanding of SP Energy Networks HSSEQ standards with knowledge of Telecommunications technologies including Fibre, Copper, Microwave Radio, and Public and Private Cellular Technologies, you will be familiar with MPLS-IP and MPLS-TP architectures, as well as PDH and SDH technologies, IP telephony solutions and network synchronisation techniques such as SyncE, ToD, NTP and Phase synchronisation. In addition, you will understand Telecommunications equipment power requirements, including -48V DC systems, Batteries and UPS technologies.

You will have excellent presentation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively, influence stakeholders and build strong relationships with both customers and internal teams. As a self-starter with a proactive, can-do approach, you will be comfortable working under pressure while balancing the requirements of customers and internal stakeholders, ensuring solution designs remain practical, feasible and deliverable.

Demonstrating a sound understanding of design best practice, Telecommunications business processes and industry frameworks such as eTOM or ITIL, which support the delivery of complex solutions, you will have the ability to quickly learn and master new skills, products and platforms, enabling you to adapt effectively within a fast-paced and evolving technical environment.
