Iberdrola is a Spanish utility founded in 1901 that became one of the largest renewable energy operators in the world, having decided in the early 2000s to build wind and hydro capacity while most European utilities were still committed to fossil generation. It operates regulated electricity networks in Spain, the United Kingdom through ScottishPower, the United States through Avangrid and Brazil through Neoenergia, alongside a very large renewable generation fleet including offshore wind. Headquartered in Bilbao and listed in Madrid, it now earns the majority of profit from regulated networks rather than from selling power.

Senior Project Manager - Real Time Systems

Location: Edinburgh Park, Edinburgh / Glasgow (Scottish Power HQ)

Salary + benefits: £59,200 to £88,800 + up to 15% bonus + Private Medical Insurance

Help us create a better future, quicker

Join SP Energy Networks as a Senior Technical Project Manager and play a vital role in delivering cutting-edge Real Time Control Systems and Advanced Energy Management Systems. You'll provide project management expertise, programme coordination, and technical direction for our Strategy & Development team, working on the delivery of Core Services Layer and REPOWER Centralised systems. This position offers the opportunity to shape innovative R&D projects under regulatory frameworks including SIF, NIA, and Innovation Rollout Mechanism, directly enabling Scotland's goal to reach Net Zero by 2044. Working closely with internal stakeholders and external partners, you'll ensure third-party supplied technical solutions transition smoothly into operational deployment, making a tangible impact on the future of energy infrastructure.

What you'll be doing

  • You'll take ownership of technical projects from inception through to operational deployment, working within the Advanced Energy Management System Department. Your role includes creating project charters, preparing technical roadmaps, and managing project plans in coordination with technical specialists. You'll guide and motivate both internal and external project teams, ensuring all stakeholders remain engaged throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Financial management will be a key accountability, with oversight of budgets up to £5m using project business systems. You'll prepare essential reporting for PMO and financial reviews, assist in generating investment dossiers, and participate in procurement exercises. Working with third-party companies, you'll help develop and negotiate project contracts while maintaining rigorous budgetary control.
  • Risk management forms a critical part of your remit. You'll develop contingency plans, manage change control processes, and ensure technical and quality strategies align with project requirements. Enabling the handover to Delivery Teams, you'll coordinate the installation of hardware, software, communication systems, and substation equipment. Running retrospectives to capture lessons learned, you'll drive continuous improvement across all projects. You may also deputise for the AEMS Manager and help develop and implement departmental strategy.

What you'll bring

  • You'll have practical experience with Real-Time Control Systems and ADMS Systems, combined with project management expertise in ICT environments. A qualification such as PRINCE2, APM, SCRUM Master or equivalent demonstrates your professional capability. Your track record includes managing complex ICT projects with budgets up to £5m and guiding teams of up to 10 people.
  • Your technical knowledge spans ICT systems delivery, including software and platform engineering, along with System Architecture covering Servers, Firewalls, and Routers. You hold an HND or Degree level qualification and possess recognised Project/Programme qualifications. Your experience with financial management systems such as SAP enables you to handle POs, Invoices, Accruals, and Payments effectively.
  • You bring strong communication abilities with clear written and oral skills in English. Proficiency in project management tools and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) enables your daily work. Your approach to risk management is proactive and conscientious, and you remain highly motivated and positive under pressure. You can manage stakeholders effectively, ensuring buy-in across diverse groups, and you're experienced in guiding teams through technology-focused projects with complex interfaces and multiple stakeholders. A full and valid UK driving licence is required. Above all, you demonstrate strong safety awareness, professional behaviour, integrity, a positive 'can do' attitude, flexibility, and self-discipline.

What's in it for you

As well as an attractive salary which is reviewed annually, you can also enjoy a number of other benefits. With our pension scheme, we'll double match your contribution up to a company contribution of 10%.
