Why this role is on the menu

Instacart operates at the intersection of food access, gig economy labor, and marketplace regulation, making legislative and regulatory engagement a core business function, not an afterthought. As the regulatory landscape around gig economy platforms, marketplace operators, and labor practices continues to evolve rapidly, the Legislative and Labor Team needs a skilled lawyer to analyze emerging requirements, build compliance frameworks, and shape the regulatory conversation before it shapes Instacart. Without this role, gaps in legal analysis and compliance strategy could create operational risk across multiple areas of the business. A year from now, Instacart will have stronger legal frameworks in place, clearer compliance strategies across regulatory domains, and a more coordinated voice in the cross-industry conversations that define the rules of the road for the gig economy.

What you'll cook up in your first year

• Cross-functional regulatory responses are coordinated with clarity: Policy and Government Affairs, Operations, Product, and Communications teams have a consistent, well-analyzed legal perspective on legislative matters affecting Instacart's operations.
• A comprehensive review of legislation impacting gig economy participants, marketplaces, retailers, and consumers is complete, with actionable legal guidance delivered to business partners to drive compliant operations.
• Legal frameworks and compliance best practices for meeting legislative and regulatory mandates are developed and documented, giving the company a foundation to navigate evolving requirements with confidence.
• Instacart's relationships with external counsel, trade associations, and industry partners are actively managed, with cross-industry initiatives underway that contribute to shaping the regulatory conversation in favor of gig economy innovation.
• Expertise in emerging areas of law relevant to Instacart's business is built and shared internally, ensuring the team is prepared to respond to new legal challenges as they arise.

The secret ingredients we're looking for

Must-have pantry staples (Minimum Qualifications)

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
• 3+ years of experience practicing law.
• Demonstrated ability to synthesize, analyze, and provide precise legal advice in response to legislative updates.
• Experience working with legislative bodies, government agencies, or regulatory matters.
• Proven success in supporting compliance initiatives and executing legal frameworks.
• Understanding of legislative processes and the regulatory landscape.

Optional garnishes (Preferred Qualifications)

• Experience with legislative or regulatory strategy.
• Familiarity with issues facing marketplace platform companies, gig economy platform companies, or similarly highly regulated businesses

Instacart provides highly market-competitive compensation and benefits in each location where our employees work. This role is remote and the base pay range for a successful candidate is dependent on their permanent work location. Please review our Flex First remote work policy here. Currently, we are only hiring in the following provinces: Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia.

Offers may vary based on many factors, such as candidate experience and skills required for the role. Additionally, this role is eligible for a new hire equity grant as well as annual refresh grants. Please read more about our benefits offerings here.
