Overview
Instacart is an American grocery technology company founded in 2012 that connects shoppers with retailers rather than holding inventory or operating stores of its own. Its economics have shifted substantially: the marketplace and delivery fees that once dominated are now accompanied by a large advertising business selling placement to consumer goods brands, and by enterprise software that powers retailers' own websites and in-store technology. Headquartered in San Francisco and listed on Nasdaq under the name Maplebear, it partners with most large American grocers rather than competing against them.
