The Senior Forensic Technician is responsible for leading the technical design, drafting, and quality assurance processes for residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional building restoration projects following catastrophic incidents, structural failures, environmental damage, and insurance losses. This role serves as a senior technical resource within the organization, providing expertise in building assessment, restoration design, building code compliance, drafting standards, and technical review.

Working closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Building Science Specialists, and clients, the Senior Forensic Technician manages complex assignments from initial site investigation through final permit-ready drawing issuance while ensuring technical excellence, consistency, and adherence to company standards. While this is not a people-management position, the role provides mentorship, technical guidance, and leadership to technicians and junior drafting staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Obtain architectural and structural measurements and prepare rough sketches while on site.
• Research failure modes and code requirements as required. Prepare all necessary reporting and permit drawing generation outlining all restoration/renovation work.
• Develop structural design and drafting of detailed drawings for restoration of damaged structures using sketches obtained on-site using Autodesk Revit.
• Ensuring compliance with industry standards and company expectations.
• Review, validate and provide feedback on drawings created by other team members to ensure quality and consistency.
• Function in a defined professional capacity with clients, contractors, building owners, and building officials when required.
• Manage time to consistently meet strict deadlines.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams on assignments.
• Practice proper safety protocols and supplied PPE when applicable (on sites).
• Request feedback and act on the opportunities to develop and grow skills to reach the organizational progression path.
• Address work-related concerns promptly with superiors and accept support for improvement where necessary.
• Engage in continuing professional development program(s) and course(s) to stay updated and augment professional knowledge and competency.
• Foster a positive and productive work environment, ensuring clear communication and alliance within the team(s).
• Take appropriate steps to advance through the stages of progression as detailed in the EFE Standards and Procedures for the role.
• Continuously monitor and assess personal and departmental processes and procedures; identify areas for improvement and suggest solutions to enhance efficiency within the technical division.
• Accurate and timely logging of billable hours with project numbers is essential.
• Ensure all projects are completed expertly and as scheduled and communications are forthcoming to all involved parties.
• Embody and promote the values of Element, acting as a brand ambassador for the organization.

Qualifications

• College diploma or advanced diploma in Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Building Engineering Technology, Structural Engineering Technology, or a related field.
• Minimum 7-10 years of progressive experience in structural drafting, restoration design, forensic investigations, or building rehabilitation projects.
• Extensive experience with wood-frame construction, structural restoration, and building envelope repair projects.
• Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and related BIM software platforms.
• Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, including Part 9 and relevant sections applicable to existing buildings and renovations.
• Strong technical acumen and ability to oversee assigned projects.
• Proven ability to work within a team and as well, work independently with minimal to no supervision.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to both internal and external stakeholders.

Physical and Mental Job Qualifications:

• Ability to climb ladders and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and access to a properly insured vehicle.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment, including our office based in Burlington, plus site visits.

The estimated salary range for this role is $80,000 - $95,000 CAD. The salary range is based on a wide array of factors, including but not limited to skillset, experience, training, location, scope of role, management responsibility, etc.
