Senior Backend Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer based in India.

This is a systems-focused backend engineering opportunity within a WebRTC and real-time communications environment.

You’ll design, build, operate, and evolve production services that power voice and communication experiences.

The role offers end-to-end ownership, from architecture and implementation through deployment, monitoring, scaling, and support.

You’ll work on distributed, low-latency systems involving authentication, routing, push notifications, DNS, and diagnostics.

A strong emphasis is placed on reliability, observability, operational excellence, and resilient service architecture.

You’ll collaborate closely with mobile, JavaScript, infrastructure, and other engineering teams across the technology stack.

Accountabilities

• Design, develop, maintain, and operate backend services supporting WebRTC and Voice SDK products, with ownership spanning the full service lifecycle.
• Take responsibility for services covering authentication and token management, proxying, push notifications, RTC DNS, and diagnostic logging.
• Improve the reliability, scalability, maintainability, and overall architecture of customer-facing distributed services.
• Enhance connection establishment, authentication flows, routing, session behavior, and service performance for real-time communication workloads.
• Build robust observability through logs, metrics, dashboards, alerts, and operational tooling, including improved visibility into push notification delivery and integrations with APNs and FCM.
• Diagnose and resolve production issues across application services, networking layers, client connectivity, and infrastructure boundaries.
• Strengthen deployment processes, rollout safety, monitoring, and production readiness for distributed systems.
• Identify recurring customer and operational issues and translate them into durable engineering improvements.
• Collaborate with mobile, JavaScript, infrastructure, and other engineering teams to improve end-to-end system reliability.
• Contribute to architecture decisions, technical direction, and the continued evolution of backend systems supporting real-time communication products.

Requirements

• Strong professional experience building and operating backend services in production, particularly within distributed or service-oriented architectures.
• Hands-on experience with Elixir or Erlang, or strong backend engineering expertise combined with the ability and willingness to learn Elixir quickly.
• Experience building or operating real-time, low-latency, or connection-oriented systems.
• Strong understanding of backend fundamentals, including authentication, service communication, session lifecycles, reliability, fault tolerance, and failure recovery.
• Demonstrated ownership of services across design, development, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, scaling, and ongoing improvement.
• Practical experience with Kubernetes, containers, CI/CD, and modern production infrastructure.
• Strong observability mindset, with experience using logging, metrics, dashboards, alerting, and root-cause analysis to improve service reliability.
• Good understanding of networking fundamentals and the ability to troubleshoot issues spanning software, networks, and infrastructure.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines and distributed teams.
• Experience with WebRTC, VoIP, voice/video communications, WebSockets, or other real-time communication technologies is highly valued.
• Familiarity with push notification infrastructure such as APNs or FCM, as well as DNS, edge routing, service discovery, or globally distributed systems, is advantageous.
• Experience developing diagnostic, observability, or troubleshooting tools, or backend services supporting mobile and JavaScript SDKs, is a plus.
