Backend Developer

We are seeking a hands-on Backend Developer to design, build and scale modern cloud-native applications powered by AI technologies. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in Node.js, Azure Functions, PostgreSQL and API development, along with practical exposure to AI/LLM integrations, intelligent automation and modern software engineering practices. You will be responsible for building highly scalable backend services, integrating AI capabilities into business workflows, developing APIs and enabling AI-powered user experiences across our products.

The candidate will have responsibilities across the following functions:

Backend Development:

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js, Express.js, and Azure Functions.
• Build secure and high-performance RESTful APIs and event-driven services.
• Design and optimise PostgreSQL databases and data models.
• Develop microservices and serverless applications on Microsoft Azure.
• Implement authentication, authorisation, and security best practices.
• Ensure system reliability, scalability, observability, and performance.

AI and Intelligent Systems:

• Integrate Large Language Models (LLMs) such as OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar AI services into business applications.
• Develop AI-powered workflows including document processing, conversational assistants, intelligent search, and workflow automation.
• Build Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions using vector databases and embeddings.
• Design and implement AI agents capable of performing business tasks and orchestrating workflows.
• Evaluate and optimise prompts, AI outputs, and model performance.
• Implement AI guardrails, monitoring, and usage controls. Integration & Platform Engineering
• Integrate with third-party platforms through APIs, webhooks, and event streams.
• Develop data pipelines and backend services supporting AI and analytics workloads.
• Work closely with frontend, product, and AI teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Participate in architecture discussions and technical decision-making.

Engineering Excellence:

• Write unit, integration, and automated tests.
• Conduct code reviews and mentor junior developers.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines and DevOps best practices.
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity.
• Follow Agile development methodologies and engineering standards.

The core requirements for the job include the following:

Core Backend Skills:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• 5-9 years of backend development experience.
• Strong proficiency in Node.js, Express.js, and TypeScript.
• Hands-on experience with Azure Functions and Azure cloud services.
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL and database optimisation.
• Experience designing and consuming REST APIs.
• Understanding of microservices and distributed systems.
• Experience with Git and Agile software development.

AI and Modern Development Skills:

• Experience integrating AI/LLM services such as Azure OpenAI, Anthropic or similar platforms.
• Understanding of prompt engineering techniques.
• Experience building AI-powered applications or intelligent automation workflows.
• Knowledge of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) concepts.
• Familiarity with vector databases such as Qdrant or Azure AI Search.
• Hands-on experience with AI agents and agent orchestration frameworks.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or similar platforms.
• Awareness of AI governance, security, and responsible AI practices.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, or similar AI frameworks.
• Experience with Azure AI Foundry / Azure AI Studio.
• Knowledge of message queues such as RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus, Kafka, or Event Hub.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Exposure to MLOps concepts and AI model deployment.
• Experience building SaaS or multi-tenant enterprise applications.
• Knowledge of GraphQL and event-driven architectures.
