Senior Software Engineer
Koda North is hiring a Senior Software Developer to help design, build, and improve reliable software systems for US-based clients.
This role is for an experienced engineer who can take ownership of complex features, backend services, APIs, databases, integrations, and production applications. You should be comfortable making technical decisions, reviewing tradeoffs, improving existing systems, and guiding work from early requirements through release and long-term maintenance.
The ideal candidate has strong software engineering fundamentals, hands-on experience with modern web applications, practical backend experience with Python and Java, and the judgment to build systems that are secure, maintainable, scalable, and useful in the real world.

Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software development experience
- Strong experience building and maintaining production software systems
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including system design, data modeling, API design, and debugging
- Hands-on backend development experience with Python and Java
- Experience designing and building REST APIs, service layers, integrations, and data-driven applications
- Strong experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQL Server
- Ability to design maintainable data models, write efficient queries, and reason about performance
- Working knowledge of modern frontend development with JavaScript or TypeScript
- Experience delivering features across the full software development lifecycle
- Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, secure coding, error handling, and production reliability
- Experience with Git, code reviews, technical documentation, and collaborative engineering workflows
- Ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs and choose practical solutions without overengineering
- Strong communication skills with clients, stakeholders, and engineering teams
- Proven ownership mindset with the ability to lead work from requirements through production
Nice to have:
- Experience building SaaS platforms, enterprise applications, client portals, dashboards, or internal business systems
- Experience in healthcare, healthtech, clinical workflows, patient-facing software, or compliance-aware environments
- Experience with HIPAA-conscious engineering, secure data handling, RBAC, audit logs, or privacy-sensitive systems
- Experience with Django, FastAPI, Spring Boot, or similar backend frameworks
- Experience with AWS, Docker, CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, or cloud-based deployments
- Experience modernizing legacy systems, improving architecture, or stabilizing production applications
- Experience with background jobs, queues, event-driven workflows, automation, or third-party integrations
- Experience mentoring engineers, leading technical planning, or setting engineering standards

Responsibilities
- Own the design, development, and delivery of complex software features and systems
- Architect and build reliable backend services, APIs, data models, and integrations
- Develop and maintain production web applications across backend and frontend layers
- Make practical technical decisions around scalability, security, reliability, and maintainability
- Translate business requirements into clear technical plans and production-ready solutions
- Improve existing systems through refactoring, performance tuning, and architectural cleanup
- Review code, guide implementation quality, and help raise engineering standards
- Debug complex issues across application code, APIs, databases, infrastructure, and production logs
- Collaborate with product, design, engineering, and client-facing teams to define realistic delivery plans
- Support production releases, incident resolution, monitoring, and continuous system improvement
- Document key technical decisions, system behavior, and implementation details
- Identify technical risks early and recommend thoughtful, business-aware solutions
