The Role

The Role

As a Mainframe Modernization Expert, you will serve as a senior technical authority driving the transformation of mission-critical enterprise systems through modern z/OS technologies, containerization, and advanced identity architectures. You will champion the evolution of core mainframe assets, enabling them to integrate seamlessly with modern hybrid cloud environments while maintaining the highest levels of performance and availability.

In this pivotal role, you will design, configure, and optimize next-generation z/OS subsystems-including Java on z/OS, zCX, and z/OS Connect-while partnering across architecture focus groups to solve intricate technical challenges. You will lead modernization initiatives that enhance system agility, modernize tooling, and establish robust, centralized security standards across global enterprise infrastructures.

What You Will Do

• Architect, implement, and optimize Java runtime environments on mainframe platforms running IBM WebSphere Application Server Liberty.
• Deploy and maintain IBM z/OS Container Extensions (zCX) to enable native hosting of containerized workloads on z/OS.
• Configure, enhance, and monitor RESTful API services and integration points using z/OS Connect and Liberty server instances.
• Design and implement modern authentication and directory solutions, transitioning local container accounts to centralized RACF and LDAP architectures.
• Configure Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) token logons and secure RACF user ID integrations across zCX environments.
• Install, customize, and maintain critical enterprise workload automation tools, including the HCL Dynamic Workload Console (DWC).
• Read, analyze, and restructure core z/OS system exits and utilities to sustain operational stability and policy compliance.
• Lead cross-functional focus group initiatives to define architectural standards, resolve complex infrastructure bottlenecks, and mentor engineering teams.

Required Skills and Experience

• Advanced technical depth in IBM z/OS architectures, system components, modern mainframe features, and system exits.
• Proven hands-on experience running, configuring, and tuning Java applications within IBM WebSphere Application Server Liberty on z/OS.
• Demonstrated expertise deploying and managing containerized workloads using IBM z/OS Container Extensions (zCX).
• Practical proficiency configuring, monitoring, and scaling RESTful services via z/OS Connect.
• Strong working knowledge of IBM Security z/OS (RACF) administration, user directory structures, and security exits.
• Deep understanding of enterprise authentication protocols, including LDAP integration, MFA token logons, and PassTickets.
• Strong diagnostic and analytical capabilities with a track record of resolving root-cause technical issues across cross-functional focus groups.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Hands-on experience installing, administering, and integrating HCL Dynamic Workload Console (DWC) or IBM Workload Automation tooling.
• Experience utilizing enterprise performance monitoring and observability tools tailored for z/OS Connect and WebSphere Liberty instances.
• Practical background working with system utilities and exits such as NetView and FTP exits (e.g., DVGPRET$).
• Active industry or vendor credentials in IBM Z systems programming, modernization architectures, or enterprise security.
