Annual Salary: $150,000- $175,000

LifeMoves is the largest and most effective provider of housing and services for neighbors experiencing homelessness in Silicon Valley since 1987. Our Mission is to end homelessness by providing interim housing, supportive services, and building collaborative partnerships. With 40 programs, LifeMoves gives our neighbors experiencing homelessness a temporary place to call home while providing intensive, customized case management through site-based programs and community outreach.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Assistant Controller will report to the Chief Financial Officer. As our Assistant Controller, you won't just be managing books, you will be a strategic partner to the Controller and Chief Financial Officer in scaling our financial operations. You will lead a high-performing accounting team, modernize our reporting systems, and ensure that our financial integrity remains a competitive advantage as we navigate complex regulatory landscapes.The role involves managing the accounting team, overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. This position plays a key role in maintaining strong internal controls and supporting strategic financial planning.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Act as the subject matter expert for federal, state, and local regulations, with a specific focus on CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) compliance for federal grants.

• Manage and mentor our accounting staff, providing the training and development needed to help build a sector leading finance team.

• Oversee month-end and year-end close processes to ensure the Board and senior leadership have accurate, timely, and actionable financial data.

• Support the Controller in managing daily operations, including AP, AR, Payroll, and the General Ledger.

• Oversee the full lifecycle of public funding agreements, including the rigorous monitoring of sub-recipient records ensuring all expenditures across interim housing and supportive services meet the "allowability, allocability, and reasonableness" standards defined under 2 CFR 200 (Uniform Guidance)

• Lead the preparation and submission of the Indirect Cost Rate Proposal to the organization’s cognizant agency, including the development of supporting schedules, rate information narratives, and the Certificate of Indirect Costs.

• Drive the implementation and continuous improvement of financial systems and processes to increase organizational agility.

• Collaborate across teams to translate complex accounting principles into clear insights for non-finance professionals.

• Act as the primary lead for the Annual Single Audit under Uniform Guidance, ensuring the accuracy of the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards and maintaining the internal control documentation required to safeguard federal funding.

• Contribute to the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and long-term strategic financial analysis.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA certification highly preferred.

EXPERIENCE

• 6 to 8 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, including at least 1 to 2 years in leadership.

• Deep knowledge of GAAP and a high degree of comfort with complex financial reporting.

• Experience in the non-profit sector and a strong understanding of federal grant requirements (CFR) is a major advantage.

• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to solve complex problems and make data-driven decisions.

• The ability to thrive in a fast-paced Silicon Valley environment with changing priorities and tight deadlines.

• Proficiency in modern accounting software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or Sage Intacct). Proficiency in NetSuite highly preferred

• Expert-level Microsoft Excel skills (including pivot tables, V-lookups, and data modeling).

• A track record of using technology to automate manual processes.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Contingent Upon:

• Satisfactory results of a background check

• Satisfactory results of a DMV Motor Vehicle Record Check

• Valid California driver's license, reliable transportation, and current vehicle insurance

• Proof of clear TB test dated within 60 days of hire

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Hybrid/On-site, in-person working requirements: Hybrid

• Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise 3-4 finance team members

• Travel: This role may include small amounts of travel to trainings and admin events

• Physical Demands: Duties may require sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, reaching, reading, using computers or other equipment, communicating and exchanging information with others, and lifting or moving up to 25 lbs.
