  • Reporting to senior leadership or the appropriate oversight committee, the successful candidate will lead risk-based audit work across the organisation, communicate findings clearly and work with leaders to support timely, practical improvements.
  • This role requires sound professional judgement, strong analytical skills and the confidence to raise sensitive issues with discretion and integrity.

About the Role

  • The Lead, Internal Audit will plan and deliver an internal audit programme that reflects the organisation’s key risks and priorities. The role will assess whether policies and procedures are being followed, resources are properly safeguarded, records are reliable, and controls are operating as intended.
  • You will work across departments, engaging with managers and staff to understand processes, identify control gaps and agree appropriate actions. You will monitor recommendations through to completion and provide clear, evidence-based reporting to management and relevant governance bodies.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a risk-based internal audit plan, taking account of organisational priorities, changes and emerging risks.
  • Lead and conduct audits of financial, operational, clinical-support and administrative processes, as appropriate to the organisation.
  • Assess the design and effectiveness of internal controls, governance arrangements, risk management and compliance processes.
  • Examine records, transactions, systems and procedures; gather and evaluate evidence; and document audit work clearly.
  • Identify control weaknesses, process inefficiencies, potential irregularities and opportunities to improve accountability.
  • Prepare concise audit reports that explain findings, assess risk and set out practical recommendations.
  • Discuss findings with relevant managers, confirm factual accuracy and agree proportionate corrective actions and completion dates.
  • Present significant findings, themes and overdue actions to senior management and appropriate oversight committees.
  • Monitor management action plans and verify that agreed recommendations have been implemented effectively.
  • Advise managers on internal controls, risk mitigation and process improvement while maintaining the independence of the audit function.

  • Promote awareness of internal controls, ethical conduct and accountability across the organisation.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of the internal audit function, including its methods, tools and reporting.

  • Substantial experience in internal audit, external audit, risk management, compliance or a closely related assurance role.
  • Demonstrated experience leading audits or audit engagements from planning through reporting and follow-up.

  • Experience assessing financial and operational processes and presenting findings to senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, report-writing and presentation skills.
  • Confidence handling sensitive matters and communicating difficult findings with professionalism and sound judgement.
  • High standards of integrity, objectivity, independence and confidentiality.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple audits, deadlines and stakeholder relationships.

What success looks like:

  • In this role, you will help ensure that significant risks and control weaknesses are identified and addressed. Your work will give leaders clear information on where processes are working well and where action is needed, while supporting a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
