Lockheed Martin is the largest defence contractor in the world, formed in 1995 by merging Lockheed Corporation with Martin Marietta and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. Its single most important programme is the F-35 Lightning II, the most expensive weapons system ever built, alongside the F-16, the C-130 transport and classified work at the Skunk Works advanced development unit. The company also dominates missile defence with THAAD and PAC-3 interceptors, supplies HIMARS and Javelin systems, owns the helicopter maker Sikorsky, and builds the Orion crew capsule and military satellites through its space division.

The Opportunity

Eligibility: Applicants must be Australian citizens and be eligible to obtain and maintain an active Australian Government Defence security clearance at the level required for the position.

Join the AIR6500 program and help deliver one of Australia's most advanced Defence capabilities.

AIR6500 is developing the Joint Air Battle Management System (JABMS), a next-generation System-of-Systems capability that integrates sensors, communications, command and control, and missile defence across multiple operational domains.

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you'll work alongside highly skilled engineering teams to solve complex technical challenges in a collaborative and digitally enabled environment. Whether your expertise lies in requirements, systems design, architecture, integration or verification, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to capability that directly supports Australia's national security objectives.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a large-scale Defence program while developing your expertise in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), Agile delivery and System-of-Systems engineering.

Key Responsibilities

The Systems Engineer's primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop and manage system and subsystem requirements within a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environment
  • Support system architecture, interface definition, integration and verification activities
  • Produce engineering artefacts including requirements, design documentation, specifications and trade studies
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, SMEs and Defence stakeholders to support capability development and delivery
  • Contribute to engineering reviews, design activities and technical decision-making processes
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and the adoption of modern engineering practices across the program

What you’ll bring

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Experience across the systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements, design, integration, verification or validation activities
  • Exposure to Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and tools such as Cameo, MagicDraw, Rhapsody or similar
  • Experience working on complex systems within Defence, aerospace, communications or other high-technology environments
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and stakeholder engagement skills
  • The ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams while managing competing priorities
  • Engineering degree or equivalent industry experience
  • NV1 security clearance and ability to handle Export Controlled information
  • Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice
