A.P. Moller-Maersk is a Danish shipping and logistics group founded in 1904 that operates one of the largest container fleets in the world and has spent the past several years trying to become an integrated logistics company rather than only a carrier. The strategic argument is that container shipping is a brutally cyclical commodity business, while contract logistics, warehousing and air freight produce steadier earnings and deeper customer relationships. Headquartered in Copenhagen and controlled by the Moller family foundation, it also operates APM Terminals, one of the largest port terminal networks globally.

At Maersk, marine fuels are central to reliable vessel operations and technical performance. As the shipping industry evolves and new fuel solutions emerge, ensuring fuel quality, managing technical risk, and safeguarding operational readiness has never been more critical.

The role

We are looking for a Senior Marine Fuels Specialist to serve as a trusted technical expert across Maersk's global fuel operations. In this role, you will lead investigations into fuel quality and performance issues, support the testing and implementation of new fuel solutions, and provide expert guidance on fuel-related risks, standards, and operational challenges.

Working closely with vessel operations, fuel sourcing, engineering teams, suppliers, laboratories, and industry partners, you will play a key role in ensuring that the fuels powering our fleet are safe, reliable, compliant, and fit for purpose today while helping shape the fuel solutions of tomorrow

Key responsibilities

Fuel Quality and Technical Assurance

  • Act as Maersk's technical expert on marine fuel quality, performance, and offer advise on operational risk.
  • Lead investigations of fuel quality, fuel performance, quantity disputes, and other fuel-related issues.
  • Support fuel-related claims and support commercial settlements.
  • Conduct technical risk assessments to support fuel sourcing and deployment.
  • Offer advice on blend standards and other technical aspects to fuel traders, operators, and compliance people across the organization

Alternative Fuels and Testing

  • Support testing and implementation of conventional (fossil and biofuel) and emerging marine fuels.
  • Assist on field-testing of fuels.
  • Evaluate new fuel performance, compatibility, and operational suitability.
  • Translate trial results into operational guidance, standards, and recommendations.
  • Provide technical input to Maersk's fuel transition strategy.

Risk, Compliance, and Industry Engagement

  • Support monitoring of fuel-related regulations, standards, and industry developments.
  • Support assurance activities involving fuel suppliers, laboratories, and surveyors.
  • Identify fuel-related risks and drive corrective actions.
  • Represent Maersk in industry forums, OEM working groups, and standardisation bodies.
  • Share technical knowledge and support capability development across the organisation.

What You Will Bring

  • 10+ years of experience in marine fuels markets or related energy industries.
  • A team player mindset with strong stakeholder management skills
  • Strong knowledge of marine fuel specifications, quality assessment, laboratory testing, and fuel performance.
  • Proven experience investigating and resolving complex fuel-related technical issues.
  • Experience supporting vessel operations, fuel trials, or implementation of new fuels.
  • Strong understanding of fuel risk management and assurance processes.
  • Ability to work effectively with vessel crews, technical specialists, suppliers, laboratories, OEMs, and senior management.

Why Join Us?

  • This role offers a unique opportunity to shape fuel quality governance, support the adoption of new fuels and influence operational reliability across one of the world’s largest shipping networks.
  • At Maersk, you will join a collaborative team focused on execution, continuous improvement and helping shape the future of sustainable shipping.
  • Together, we will make marine fuel operations safer, smarter and ready for the future.
