Manulife is a Canadian insurance and asset management group founded in Toronto in 1887, with the first Canadian prime minister as its founding president. It sells life and health insurance, annuities and retirement products in Canada, the United States under the John Hancock brand and across a dozen Asian markets, and runs Manulife Investment Management as a global asset manager for institutional and retail clients. Headquartered in Toronto and listed in Toronto, New York and Hong Kong, it earns a growing share of its profit in Asia and has been reducing its exposure to legacy long-term care liabilities through reinsurance transactions.

The role leads the Sales Management Team in expanding agency capacity through both organic development and inorganic recruitment initiatives, including the acquisition and integration of experienced advisors, leaders, and external Agency groups to strengthen market presence and broaden distribution reach.

This role is responsible for developing leadership bench strength, driving disciplined execution of strategic programs, expanding the territory's footprint, and ensuring consistent delivery of business objectives across all branches. The Territory Sales Director also ensures adherence to company standards, governance requirements, and long-term distribution objectives while fostering a high-performance culture across the territory.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of region-specific growth strategies across recruitment, agency leader development, activation, and expansion to achieve sustainable business results.
  • Identify business opportunities, agency expansion priorities, and structural improvements that strengthen the region’s overall agency footprint and competitiveness.
  • Provide strategic direction and insights to influence agency-related programs, policies, and initiatives in support of broader distribution objectives.
  • Drive territory expansion through inorganic recruitment of experienced Agency Leaders, advisors, and external agency groups.
  • Develop growth strategies that maximize opportunities across a larger territory, broader branch network, and expanded market coverage.

Performance Management

  • Drive achievement of regional targets covering sales, manpower, active advisor count, agency leader productivity, and business conservation through disciplined performance management.
  • Lead regular business reviews with the Sales Management Team to monitor key metrics, identify performance gaps, and implement recovery actions where needed.
  • Build leadership capability, accountability, and succession strength across the region by coaching direct reports and reinforcing high-performance standards.
  • Ensure sound business governance, financial discipline, and compliance with regulatory, company, and sales risk management requirements within the region.
  • Oversee performance and productivity across a significantly larger population of Agency Leaders and Financial Advisors.
  • Ensure consistent leadership accountability and business results across multiple branches within the territory.

Program Execution

  • Ensure effective implementation of company-led agency programs, initiatives, and projects across the region, with clear accountability and timely follow-through.
  • Monitor execution quality and adoption of agreed programs, processes, and tools to ensure consistent delivery and alignment with intended business outcomes.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to cascade priorities, resolve execution issues, and continuously improve field implementation practices.
  • Ensure effective rollout of strategic programs across a wider and geographically diverse branch network.
  • Drive consistent adoption of initiatives, processes, and governance standards across all territory locations.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8-10 years of leadership experience in insurance agency distribution, agency sales management, or field force development.
  • Proven ability to lead Sales Management Teams and agency leaders to drive recruitment, activation, productivity, and growth.
  • Strong understanding of agency distribution, manpower build, active advisor management, and branch or territory expansion.
  • Strong business and performance management skills, with the ability to turn plans into sustainable sales results.
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication, and judgment, with a solid understanding of governance and compliance in agency distribution.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Management, Finance, or a related field; advanced qualifications are an advantage.
