Matchtech is a UK engineering and technology recruitment agency headquartered in Whiteley near Fareham, Hampshire, placing contract, temporary and permanent staff with clients. Founded in 1984, it covers aerospace, automotive, maritime, defence and security, energy, highways, rail, water and utilities, construction and technology, and also offers managed service, RPO and recruit-train-deploy programmes for employers such as BAE Systems, Leonardo and NATS. Its vacancies, posted on behalf of clients, include civil, mechanical, process and EICA engineers, CAD technicians, software developers, project managers and site staff across the UK.

Our client, a growing multi-disciplinary consultancy serving the rail, infrastructure and construction sectors, is seeking a Geotechnical Associate for a permanent position. This is a founding leadership opportunity to develop a geotechnical design capability across Rail, Defence, Highways, Airports, Ports and Buildings, while contributing to technical delivery, client relationships, team development and business growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute to geotechnical and ground engineering design across relevant infrastructure sectors
  • Provide technical authority on slope stability, earthworks, foundation design, retaining structures and ground improvement
  • Review and approve geotechnical interpretive reports, factual reports and design deliverables
  • Develop internal geotechnical design standards, processes and templates in line with quality and delivery requirements
  • Maintain knowledge of Eurocodes, UK geotechnical standards and sector-specific requirements, including Network Rail and National Highways standards
  • Manage subcontractors delivering site investigations, including scope preparation, procurement, supervision and quality control
  • Interpret borehole logs, trial pit logs, laboratory test results and in-situ testing data
  • Build client relationships, support tenders and bids, identify new opportunities and contribute to business development activity
  • Develop and mentor geotechnical engineers while collaborating with civils, M&E, structures and survey teams
  • Manage project budgets, fee recovery, subcontractor costs, resourcing plans and commercial reporting

Job Requirements:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology or a related geotechnical discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status with ICE, the Geological Society or an equivalent professional institution, or active progress towards chartership
  • Significant experience in geotechnical consultancy and UK infrastructure projects
  • Strong geotechnical design experience covering areas such as slope stability, earthworks, foundations, retaining structures and ground improvement
  • Experience across at least two infrastructure sectors, with rail experience including Network Rail standards, legacy Railtrack standards or GRIP considered advantageous
  • Experience managing subcontractors and ground investigation programmes, including specification, procurement and quality assurance
  • Client-facing experience with involvement in business development, account management, tenders or PQQ submissions
  • Commercial awareness, strong communication skills and the confidence to provide technical leadership
  • Ability to work collaboratively while operating independently and taking ownership of delivery
  • Full UK driving licence

Benefits:

  • Associate-level seniority with genuine influence over technical strategy and service development
  • Opportunity to establish and grow a geotechnical capability within an ambitious consultancy
  • Multi-disciplinary working alongside civils, M&E, structures and survey professionals
  • Direct access to senior leadership and involvement in wider business growth plans
  • Support for professional development, team building and career progression
  • Collaborative culture focused on accountability, innovation, delivery and continuous improvement

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong and commercially aware geotechnical professional to shape a growing service line and make a lasting impact across the rail and wider infrastructure sectors. Apply now to take the next step in this Associate-level career opportunity.
