Matchtech is a UK engineering and technology recruitment agency headquartered in Whiteley near Fareham, Hampshire, placing contract, temporary and permanent staff with clients. Founded in 1984, it covers aerospace, automotive, maritime, defence and security, energy, highways, rail, water and utilities, construction and technology, and also offers managed service, RPO and recruit-train-deploy programmes for employers such as BAE Systems, Leonardo and NATS. Its vacancies, posted on behalf of clients, include civil, mechanical, process and EICA engineers, CAD technicians, software developers, project managers and site staff across the UK.

Our client, an independent highways consultancy supporting local highway authorities, public bodies and developers across London and the South East, is seeking a Senior Highway Engineer for a permanent, full-time position. The role offers the opportunity to lead highway projects from feasibility through to construction, while producing practical, buildable designs and managing trusted client relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare feasibility, preliminary and detailed designs for highway, active travel, public realm, bus priority, junction and road safety schemes
  • Produce high-quality models and drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D, including general arrangements, levels, kerbing, paving, signs, lining and construction details
  • Undertake highway geometric design, swept path analysis, levels and quantities, while coordinating drainage, utilities and other interfaces
  • Lead projects from inception through to construction support, managing scope, programme, risk, budgets and change
  • Prepare technical notes, design reports, options assessments, Road Safety Audit responses and technical approval submissions
  • Act as the day-to-day contact for clients, highway authorities, TfL, developers, contractors and other stakeholders
  • Manage Section 278 and Section 38 technical approval processes where required
  • Contribute to quality assurance, technical reviews, fee proposals, bids and the ongoing development of the consultancy

Job Requirements:

  • Degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • Substantial experience in UK highway design, with the ability to lead detailed schemes independently from feasibility to construction
  • Strong hands-on skills in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, including corridor and surface modelling, levels and drawing production
  • Experience in active travel, Healthy Streets, public realm or highway improvement schemes
  • Understanding of junction design, road safety schemes and responding to Road Safety Audits
  • Sound knowledge of the DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20 and relevant London design guidance
  • Experience in project leadership, client relationship management and clear technical writing
  • Ability to work independently, apply practical engineering judgement and communicate confidently with clients, colleagues and contractors

Experience of bus priority schemes, working with TfL, Section 278 and Section 38 works, traffic signal junction design, drainage and SuDS, MicroDrainage or similar software, and contributing to bids would be advantageous. Professional development towards chartership with the ICE or CIHT is expected, and applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

Working Arrangements:

  • Permanent, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week
  • Hybrid working
  • Flexibility around project and client requirements

Benefits:

  • Genuine ownership of projects and client relationships
  • Varied highways work covering active travel, public realm, bus priority, junctions, road safety and developer schemes
  • Supportive environment
  • Clear progression towards Principal Engineer and beyond
  • Mentoring and support towards professional chartership
  • Funded continuing professional development, training and one professional membership
  • 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Company pension scheme

If you are an experienced Senior Highway Engineer with strong AutoCAD, Civil 3D, traffic and highway design skills, this is an excellent opportunity to take ownership of varied projects and contribute to a growing consultancy. Apply now.
