Course Title: Focus Week Workshop 4: International Legal and Justice Assistance in Practice
Course Credits: 1
Term: Focus Week Fall 2026
Course Schedule: Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs 1005-1255

Course Description: This intensive workshop examines the practice of designing and delivering international legal and justice-sector assistance. Using real-world examples, students will assume the role of legal advisers tasked with designing an international assistance initiative. They will conduct a needs assessment, develop a workplan, and apply project-management tools, including results-based management and risk analysis. Particular attention will be given to operational realities: working with partner ministries in a diplomatic context, coordinating stakeholders, conducting comparative legal research, and navigating political and institutional constraints. The course will also introduce key perspectives from law and development, international relations, and human rights. Students will critically examine the assumptions underlying international assistance, its relationship to Canada’s foreign-policy priorities, and the limitations and transferability of Canadian legal and institutional approaches.
