Principal Software Engineer - OS Internals

We are the Windows Servicing and Delivery (WSD) organization. We deliver updates to every Windows-based device in the world to protect users and enable them to be productive. While Security remains our primary focus, we also enable our commercial and enterprise customers by enabling new device support, addressing reliability and upgrade blocking issues. Our work is critical for the Windows family of devices, Azure and more. We are an agile team and ship twice every month, impacting over a billion Windows devices in the ecosystem. You will collaborate with your teammates in India, and your partner teams in Ireland and Redmond, Washington, USA.

Our Update Platform team is looking for a highly motivated Principal Software Engineer to help us in this mission. You will play a key role in extending and modifying the Windows Update Platform for keeping our customer base secure, improving the reliability of the platform, addressing customer reported issues, and developing features to light up new scenarios for updates in the Windows ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute the strategy and plan for continued improvement in how we deliver ongoing protections and innovations to the billion+ in-market Windows devices, gaining efficiency and building trust.
• Collaborate with senior executives at Microsoft, leaders from product engineering, security services, and other business units to ensure a shared sense of success.
• Be responsible for the engineering deliverables impacting billions of Windows customers.
• Oversees partnership with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements within and across teams for multiple solutions or product lines.
• Oversee teams and provides technical leadership for identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to development teams, ensuring best practices and high standards of software quality.
• Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and processes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team.
• Develop features to support the update stack in Windows.
• Reproducing, debugging and fixing customer-reported problems.
• Crafting high-quality, bug-free fixes with minimum application compatibility risk.
• Adding new features in the Windows Update Platform.
• Prioritizing your collection of work and delivering fixes in a timely fashion to meet deadlines.
• Collaborating with escalation engineers and other partner teams across Microsoft to debug, develop, test and ship updates.
• Finding ways to improve products, tools, and processes for long-term benefit for Microsoft and customers.
• Mentoring engineers in the team.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or related technical discipline.
• 15+ years of experience in building and shipping production-grade software products.
• Solid knowledge of software development methodologies, tools, and processes.
• Experience in managing highly complex, large-scale software engineering projects.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively.
• Solid communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Proven track record of delivering high-quality software solutions on time and within budget.
• Experience in collaborating with geographically distributed partner teams.
• Experience with OS Internals and system programming.
• Experience with relevant programming skills in C, C++ or equivalent.
• Ability to understand unfamiliar code bases, and debug server-side, multi-threaded, and highly scalable applications.
• Experience in working with Windows system level programming is desirable.
• Demonstrated results working with a global team.
• Experience with Agile/scrum methodologies.
