Manager Software Engineering

Join our fast-paced and passionate team as a Manager of Software Engineering. As we scale, you will be instrumental in building our foundation from the ground up. This is a dynamic, hands-on role for a self-starter who thrives in a fluid startup environment. You'll have the opportunity to work on cutting edge technologies, work closely with leadership, and develop and implement engineering practices that support our mission and growth. Your key responsibilities are as follows:

• Manage a team of 5 software engineers who develop the software that runs on and interacts with the products we ship.
• Hold regular one on ones, run team meetings, and support career planning and growth for each direct report.
• Own team allocation planning, tracking, and scrumming, and provide consistent status reporting to PE and PM.
• Manage day-to-day resourcing at the department level while keeping execution steady and predictable.
• Document and maintain departmental processes and procedures, and lead continuous improvement efforts such as cross-training, process refinement, CI/CD, and tooling.
• Provide technical oversight of departmental scope and track portfolio risk and burn-down.
• Facilitate peer reviews with team SMEs to make sure artifacts and external communications are accurate and high quality.
• Recruit, interview, and help onboard new engineers as the team grows.
• Work closely with hardware, firmware, product, and program teams to keep software delivery aligned with product schedules.
• Participate in code reviews and hold the team to solid engineering practices.
• Communicate clearly and often with leadership, PE/PM, and your team about schedule, quality, risk, and resourcing.
• Use tenacity, patience, self-discipline, and a passion for excellence to keep schedules accurate, data clean, and documentation clear.

Requirements

• This position requires access to export-controlled information. Employment is contingent upon the applicant being a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3).

Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 7-10 years of software engineering experience, at a level equivalent to a Software Engineer III/IV.
• 2+ years of experience leading, managing, or directing a software team.
• Experience with software that runs on or talks to hardware/embedded products is a plus.

Skills:

• Experience with agile practices, sprint planning, scrumming, and reporting status up to program or project stakeholders.
• Able to manage shifting priorities and team workload without losing consistent execution.
• Good at defining, documenting, and improving engineering processes.
• Strong code review instincts and comfortable owning risk tracking and burn-down across a portfolio of work.
• Clear communicator, written and verbal, who can translate technical detail into updates leadership and program teams can actually use.
• Familiar with Git, CI/CD, and modern engineering tooling.
• Strong problem solver who can work independently and pull cross-functional teams into alignment.

Benefits

The expected annual salary range for this position is $125,000-$180,000.
