About the Opportunity
MoonPay is building a unified identity and KYC platform that can support customers across ramps, cards, virtual accounts and enterprise products.
Today, many financial products treat identity as part of a single onboarding flow. We are building it as a reusable platform capability: a secure identity layer that allows customers to verify once, maintain control of their information and access different MoonPay-powered products without repeating the same journey each time.
This role will help define the architecture and technical direction of that platform. You will work across product, engineering, compliance and security to determine how identity is captured, verified, stored, linked and exposed safely through APIs and SDKs.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will hold a hands-on technical position. The problem is not fully defined, and we are looking for someone who can shape the platform while building its most important components.
Lead through ambiguity
Turn a broad identity and KYC vision into a clear technical strategy, architecture and sequence of deliverable work.
Identify the boundaries between identity, authentication, verification, compliance and product-specific onboarding.
Set the technical bar through rigorous reviews, clear standards and lasting engineering habits.
Align teams across ramps, cards, virtual accounts and enterprise products around a shared identity model.
Build the identity platform
Design a unified identity layer that can support multiple MoonPay products, partners and regulated use cases.
Model the lifecycle of a customer’s identity, including creation, verification, linking, updates, consent and deletion.
Build secure APIs and SDKs that allow internal teams and external partners to use identity capabilities without understanding the underlying complexity.
Integrate KYC and identity-verification providers while keeping MoonPay’s internal model consistent and extensible.
Develop clear ownership boundaries between the identity platform and the products built on top of it.
Protect sensitive customer data
Define how identity data is stored, accessed and shared across products, jurisdictions and legal entities.
Design for consent, auditability, data residency, retention and deletion from the beginning.
Build clear authorisation controls around who and what can access verified customer information.
Ensure the platform degrades safely when external verification providers or internal dependencies fail.
Partner closely with Security, Privacy, Legal and Compliance without allowing the platform to become difficult for developers to use.
Create a platform developers trust
Build public-facing APIs, SDKs and documentation that make complex identity workflows straightforward to integrate.
Establish stable contracts, versioning strategies and migration paths for teams and partners using the platform.
Provide observability into identity journeys, verification decisions and integration failures.
Reduce the need for product teams to rebuild identity and KYC logic independently.
About You
Must-have experience and skills
Identity platform experience. You have built or owned production identity, KYC, authentication or customer-data infrastructure used across multiple products.
Platform architecture. You have defined shared technical foundations rather than delivering only a single onboarding or login experience.
Public APIs and SDKs. You have built interfaces used by external developers and understand stability, versioning, documentation and backwards compatibility.
Sensitive data. You understand the security, privacy and operational requirements involved in storing and processing identity information.
Systems thinking. You can reason across data models, verification providers, product workflows, compliance requirements and failure modes.
Ambiguity and influence. You have taken a problem nobody had fully scoped, created a technical direction and brought multiple teams with you.
Hands-on engineering. You continue to design, build, review and operate production systems rather than leading only through documents and meetings.
Nice-to-have experience
Built identity or KYC infrastructure within payments, fintech, banking or another regulated environment.
Experience with reusable verified identity, identity vaults or portable customer profiles.
Experience with OAuth, OIDC, WebAuthn, passkeys, session management or account recovery.
Built systems supporting consent, data residency, privacy requests and audit trails.
Worked with multiple KYC, KYB or identity-verification providers.
Experience building developer platforms for external partners.
Familiarity with cryptocurrency, wallets or digital-asset products.
Familiarity with our stack: TypeScript, Node.js, GCP, PostgreSQL, Redis and Kubernetes.
