Nationwide Building Society is a UK mutual financial institution headquartered in Swindon, England, providing mortgages, current accounts, savings, credit cards and business banking to its members. Owned by its members rather than shareholders, it is the largest building society in the world, operates a national branch network and acquired Virgin Money UK in 2024. Its openings span software, data and integration engineering, analytics, compliance, risk and audit roles, mortgage technical delivery, customer support and branch management, mainly in Swindon, London, Northampton and Glasgow.

We are looking for a Data Engineer who is passionate about technology, data and learning. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers to build and support data solutions while developing your technical skills, understanding of our data and knowledge of the business.

You’ll contribute to the delivery of high-quality data products, learn modern engineering practices and progressively take greater ownership as your experience grows.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job, you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part-time, you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at our Northampton, Swindon or London office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works.

You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.

If you’re a colleague on long-term absence (for example, on parental leave) or a temporary worker, please use your personal email address to submit an application.

What you’ll be doing

You will play an important role in developing and supporting the data pipelines, transformations and data products that enable colleagues across the organisation to make effective, data-driven decisions. Working alongside experienced engineers, you will contribute to the delivery of reliable and efficient data solutions while growing your technical expertise and understanding of modern data engineering practices.

In this role, you will write clean, maintainable code using technologies such as SQL and Python, supporting the development of high-quality data products and services. You will help ensure the accuracy and reliability of data by carrying out testing and quality checks, investigating issues and supporting the resolution of data and pipeline incidents in a timely manner.

You will gain hands-on experience with a range of technologies, including Databricks, dbt, Azure and GitHub, while following established engineering, testing, deployment and change management processes. Maintaining clear technical documentation and applying data security, governance and access standards will be key aspects of your work, helping to ensure solutions are robust, secure and well managed.

Working collaboratively with engineers, analysts, product teams and other stakeholders, you will contribute to code reviews, Agile ceremonies and wider team delivery activities. You will build your understanding of the business, its data and the ways in which our solutions support both customers and colleagues, enabling you to make a meaningful contribution to ongoing initiatives.

As part of a supportive and collaborative environment, you will actively develop your technical capability through practical experience, coaching and continuous learning. You will be encouraged to contribute ideas that simplify processes, increase automation and improve the way the team works, while building awareness of developments in data, analytics and AI and exploring how these can be applied to create value for the organisation.

Success in this role means building strong engineering foundations while consistently delivering high-quality work as part of the team. You will continue to develop your technical and business knowledge, learn from feedback, collaborate effectively with colleagues and demonstrate growing confidence, accountability and ownership as your experience progresses.

About you

As a minimum requirement, you'll have:

  • A keen interest in data and software engineering

  • Knowledge or practical experience of SQL, Python or similar technologies

  • Some exposure to cloud or modern data platforms

  • An understanding of software engineering and data concepts

  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • A growth mindset, with curiosity and enthusiasm for learning

  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • An appreciation of the importance of data quality, security and responsible use of data

  • Some experience or knowledge in Databricks, dbt, Azure, GitHub, DevOps or Agile ways of working

Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:

  • Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind
  • Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think - we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand
  • Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development
  • Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes

You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.

Banking - but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society

We forge our own path at Nationwide.

As a mutual, we’re owned by our members - those customers who bank, save or have a mortgage with us. We challenge the financial sector status quo. We don’t see customers as the engine of our own profit. We share our profits with them and put their needs first. Always there when they need us. Supporting them and their lives.

If you’re inspired by fairer finances, passionate about making a meaningful impact, and truly care about our customers, you’re one of us.

At Nationwide, you are challenged to grow and rewarded for doing so. Valued. Recognised. Inspired to be your best. As a community, we want our working lives to count. As a team, we celebrate what we achieve. As a standard-setter, we work for the good of customers, communities, and broader society.

We are purpose-driven. Uncompromisingly customer. Unstoppably Nationwide.
