Position Summary:

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking an experienced, part-time Animal Care Specialist to oversee the care and welfare of aquatic and other organisms with diverse care requirements. The preferred schedule is Fridays and weekends, up to 24 hours per week.

Essential Functions:

• Demonstrate experience and familiarity with best practices for culturing a wide variety of aquatic organisms and ant colonies, including freshwater, brackish, and marine vertebrate and invertebrate animals.
• Perform general husbandry of animal collections, including jellyfish, marine arthropods/crustaceans, other aquatic invertebrates, and freshwater teleost fish.
• Maintain compliance with University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines.
• Manage quarantine systems, particularly fish quarantine systems, and identify potential needs for veterinary intervention.
• Maintain complex life support systems for cultured animals.
• Fabricate and select tanks and other components of culture systems and build new culture systems as needed.
• Monitor, record, and adjust environmental variables, including temperature, lighting, water quality, salinity, food sources, and filtration systems, to optimize animal health and reproductive viability.
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of animal care, maintenance, health status, and life cycle events.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field.
• At least one year of full-time experience in aquatic animal husbandry.
• Experience managing aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates preferred.
• At least one year of experience managing quarantine systems preferred.
• At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be waived where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience that specifically prepares the candidate for success in the position.

Compensation: $33/hour

Range:

NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, or other items.
