AI Engineer

What's the role?

Editorial Innovation builds and supports AI capability for our newsrooms. We're a small team working directly with journalists and editors, taking ideas from prototype to something the newsroom uses every day.

In this role, you'll build and scale the AI systems behind our editorial products: the agents, the retrieval, and the pipelines that run them. You'll own the quality of what those systems produce, measure it properly, and keep cost and latency sensible as we scale. You'll work directly with journalists and editors, whose judgment sets the bar.

This role can be based at either our Southbank, VIC or Surry Hills, NSW office with 2 days per week from home.

Who are you?

• Strong Python engineer with production backend experience
• You've built LLM powered applications on Gemini, OpenAI or Anthropic models
• Multi agent orchestration and a framework. Google ADK preferred, LangGraph or similar is fine
• Real RAG depth across embeddings, chunking, grounding and citations
• Concurrency at scale, including job queues, rate limiting and retries
• Cloud experience, GCP preferred, including Cloud Run and Cloud Run Jobs
• 3+ years engineering

Nice to have

• Vertex AI, including Gemini and Agent Engines

• LLM eval and observability tooling such as Braintrust or OpenTelemetry (OTel)

• You follow the agentic and AI space closely and have a view on what's worth adopting
