News Corp Australia is the Australian media arm of News Corp, headquartered in Sydney, publishing national, metropolitan and regional news brands in print and digital such as The Australian, The Daily Telegraph and the Herald Sun. A wholly owned subsidiary of New York-based News Corp, it says its brands reach more than 18 million Australians a month, and it also runs events and charity work such as the Good Friday Appeal for the Royal Children's Hospital. Recruitment is led by journalism roles such as political, health, banking and regional reporters, editors and audience and social media producers, alongside account managers, fundraising staff and warehouse operators.

What's the role?

News Corp Australia is seeking a meticulous, sharply focused Verifier / Sub-Editor to join our national Editorial Innovation Team. You will be the final gatekeeper for a steady stream of journalism dedicated to expanding local news coverage and reducing news deserts across Australia.

This initiative plays a vital role in giving local communities a voice and keeping residents informed, both across metropolitan areas and regional centres. Working closely with reporters and editors, you will verify, refine, and elevate copy, ensuring our content is watertight and ready for publication across the country’s largest news network.

This role can be based at our, NSW, VIC, SA or QLD offices (2 days from home per week)

About the role

As a critical safeguard within our editorial stream, you will turn drafted copy into polished journalism by rigorously verifying claims against primary source documents, with a special focus on local council reporting. You will operate in a steady-paced, high-volume environment. Using your exceptional attention to detail, deep understanding of language nuances, and sharp news sense, you will edit copy directly, making fast, decisive calls on what to keep and what to cut to ensure every piece is accurate, engaging, and legally sound.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the final editorial checkpoint before publication, directly editing, refining, and rewriting copy to ensure accuracy and integrity.
  • Verify news copy rigorously against source documents, with a particular focus on interrogating local council documents and reports.
  • Make fast, decisive, and independent editorial decisions on what to cut and what to keep, shaping concise and impactful stories.
  • Maintain a steady editorial workflow, effectively managing quotas for story approvals.
  • Apply a deep understanding of English language nuances, assessing how word choices, sentence structures, and paragraph flows work together holistically to convey meaning and underlying assumptions.
  • Apply a strong "nose for news" to identify, elevate, and sharpen news hooks within drafted copy.
  • Ensure all copy adheres to News Corp Australia’s editorial and style guidelines, as well as applying a working knowledge of Australian media law to mitigate defamation risks.

Who are you?

  • Demonstrated professional experience working as a reporter, sub-editor, or in a similar rigorous editorial capacity.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a meticulous, investigative approach to verifying facts.
  • Comfort and confidence in making rapid editorial cuts, rewriting copy directly, and acting as the final authority before publication.
  • Advanced understanding of English grammar, tone, and structural editing, with a keen eye for how language influences reader perception.
  • Working knowledge of Australian media law and defamation principles.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Effective collaboration and time management skills, with proven experience meeting targets and working independently, whether remotely or in an office environment.
  • Highly desirable: Experience in council reporting or a strong interest in local government and council affairs, accompanied by a genuine passion for grassroots community journalism.

What we offer

  • A critical, high-impact role within News Corp Australia’s National Editorial Innovation Team, upholding the integrity of the nation's premier mastheads.
  • The chance to make a direct impact on the future of local democracy by revitalising community journalism in underserved areas.
  • Highly flexible working arrangements: Choose to work remotely from anywhere in Australia or from one of our major offices, with options for full-time, part-time, or job-share structures.
  • Competitive remuneration package with career development and learning opportunities across national and global networks.
  • The opportunity to shape and protect world-class journalism at the country's largest media organisation.
