Studio Technician II

The Studio Technician operates professional broadcast equipment for a live News show. Maintain WPIX and FCC quality control standards. Thorough knowledge of broadcast video and audio theory and its application within a Television environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Audio (A1), Audio Assist (A2), Video, Robotics, Video Server ingest / playback, operation of Satellite-microwave receive equipment, Routing switchers and video audio signal test measurement devices. Ability to operate a full pedestal Studio Camera, Jib and or Handheld camera.

2) Using Windows and Mac based software, digitize audio/video from acquired material from the field, library or baseband feeds.

Requirements:

Education: College graduate or equivalent technical training. Communications, Electronic Technology, or related degrees are helpful. Three years of related job experience.

Physical: This position requires minor lifting and some walking, as it involves setting up a television show. The ability to carry 50 pounds of equipment, including camera, cables, tripod and various television equipment is required daily. The ability to sit for long periods is necessary. Able to execute commands based upon aural directives. High visual and aural acuity along with data entry using a keyboard.

Environmenta l: Exposure to low noise levels.

Additional Duties: The ideal candidate will have the ability to work closely with on-air talent and studio guests with minimal supervision. They must be able to perform effectively under tight deadlines and time constraints. The candidate should demonstrate strong decision-making skills and the ability to make quick decisions and create packages (stories) that are both content coherent and technically accurate.

Complexity: Requires a strong understanding of audio and video production theory, broadcast workflows, and related technologies. Must possess extensive knowledge of both Windows and macOS operating systems. Working knowledge of FCC regulations and technical broadcast standards is required to help ensure WPIX remains compliant with all applicable requirements.

Impact of Decisions: Studio and Control Room Technicians are required to make timely and accurate decisions in a fast-paced, live production environment. Due to the nature of the news business, including breaking news and developing events, sound judgment and quick decision-making are essential to maintaining broadcast quality, operational continuity, and compliance standards. Errors or delays may impact on-air operations, broadcast quality, regulatory compliance, and the station's reputation.

Work Relationships: Internal: Regular interaction and collaboration with the Engineering and News departments. External: Regular interaction with all WPIX audio/video transmission, signal path, and downlink vendors to support broadcast operations and technical production needs.

Additional Responsibilities & Qualifications:

• Collaborate with the director and studio staff to coordinate production activities in the studio and on location.
• Work with the set designers to determine production needs and support overall set execution.
• Build and decorate, and maintain sets, and provide props as required for production.
• Assist with the installation, operation and maintenance of audio recording equipment.
• Provide camera, audio, and lighting support for productions as needed, including coordination with external production facilities.
• Support digital media productions while liaising with appropriate departments.
• Maintain, organize and store production equipment, and assist with studio upkeep.
• Previous experience in television, film or post-production is preferred.
• Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with video journalists, anchors, videographers, news managers, production staff and engineering teams.
• Maintain a high level of attention to detail.
• Possess strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency with basic computer applications, including Adobe Photoshop.
• Thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with tight deadlines.

Salary Range- $50.00
