Principal Performance Engineer

Job Description :

Key Responsibilities :

- Assist senior engineers in developing load models and designing comprehensive load, stress, capacity, and endurance tests.

- Design and execute performance tests spanning micro-frontends, application services, and core enterprise services.

- Develop high-quality, maintainable code in accordance with engineering and coding standards.

- Build automation that enables engineering teams to assess the performance impact of recent code changes.

- Develop automated performance and capacity testing reports that are easy to understand for Software Engineers, SREs, and senior leadership.

- Analyze performance results, identify bottlenecks, and provide actionable recommendations.

- Work with cross-functional teams to drive performance improvements through to production.

- Serve as a technical leader within a Scrum team, participating in planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and technical discussions.

- Mentor team members and provide technical guidance on performance engineering practices.

- Review proposed technical designs and provide thoughtful feedback on scalability, performance, and reliability.

- Collaborate with key stakeholders through technical discussions, demonstrations, and project reviews.

- Participate in Communities of Practice and continuous technical learning initiatives.

- Drive continuous improvement in performance engineering standards, processes, and automation.

Required Skills & Experience :

- 15+ years of experience in Performance Testing / Performance Engineering.

- 4+ years of experience working at a Principal-level capacity.

- Strong hands-on experience in designing, developing, and delivering performance engineering solutions.

- 5+ years of experience with Apache JMeter or similar performance testing tools.

- Strong experience with APM and observability tools such as :

1. AppDynamics

2. OpenSearch

3. Grafana

- Experience working with containerized Java and Node.js applications running on Kubernetes.

- Experience with traditional Virtual Machine environments and Apache Tomcat.

- Strong understanding of web technologies including HTML, HTTP, REST, JSON, and JavaScript.

- Proficiency in SQL and strong understanding of relational databases, particularly Oracle.

- Experience with source code management tools such as Git and sound software engineering practices.

Good to Have :

- Knowledge of NoSQL and time-series databases, including Apache Cassandra and InfluxDB.

- Understanding of Core Web Vitals and web performance measurement.

- Experience with tools such as :

1. SiteSpeed.io

2. Lighthouse

3. Chrome Performance Tools

4. WebPageTest

- Experience with performance engineering in large-scale distributed systems.

- Strong understanding of capacity planning and scalability engineering.

Principal-Level Leadership Expectations :

- Act as a hands-on technical leader, driving performance engineering design, development, and delivery.

- Mentor and support engineers while remaining actively involved in technical implementation.

- Work closely with key stakeholders to align technical solutions with project objectives.

- Demonstrate strong ownership, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.

- Review and challenge proposed designs constructively, providing practical recommendations on performance, scalability, and reliability.
