Nokia is a Finnish telecommunications equipment company founded in 1865 as a paper mill, which became the world's largest mobile phone maker in the 1990s before selling that business to Microsoft in 2014. It now supplies network infrastructure to operators and enterprises, covering radio access equipment for mobile networks, optical and IP routing for transport networks, fixed broadband access, and a technologies division that licenses its cellular patent portfolio. Headquartered in Espoo and listed in Helsinki and New York, it runs Nokia Bell Labs as its research arm and has been expanding into data centre networking as operator spending has slowed.

As a trainee, you will join a large global team of world-class technical patent specialists who manage Nokia’s leading 5G and 6G standard essential patent portfolio. You will have an opportunity to work closely with inventors and standards delegates to identify and protect high value 5G and 6G inventions, from idealization to patent licensing. Besides, you will also learn from the patent attorneys to create high-quality patents, extending your understanding (beyond the technology) toward patent prosecution. You will have a chance to develop competence in one of the technical areas in the 3GPP technologies domain: e.g., 6G Physical Layer, 6G MIMO, AI/ML enablers, 6G Control Plane/User Plane, 6G Architecture, 6G Security and Non-Terrestrial Networks. By learning and working in one of the most strategic teams, with Nokia-wide visibility, you will have an excellent foundation for your career development.

The position is only for a MSc/PhD student that has around one year to complete the degree, and the application must be made through the Nokia website (i.e., not through LinkedIn messaging or email).

  • Learn from and work with inventors to enable high value 5G and 6G invention disclosures in a selected technical domain

  • Learn from and work with patenting specialists for enabling high-quality patent applications in a selected technical domain

  • Learn to make decisions on the further development of the global patent portfolio in a selected technical domain

  • Learn to prepare and manage claim charts showing how patent claims map to 5G and 6G standard specifications, proving high-value high quality patent portfolio development in a selected technical domain

  • Have experience in a successful global team

  • Ongoing MSc/PhD studies in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or another closely related technology area relevant to Nokia’s business concerns

  • Familiarity with cellular communication standards such as LTE and 5G

  • Ability to work proactively, multi-task and network

It would be nice if you also had:

  • R&D experience, such as earlier internship or BSc/MSc thesis position in 3GPP related cellular technologies
