Position Description:

The Academic Advisor II contributes to the success of the Office of Undergraduate Advising by providing holistic, individualized, and proactive academic advising to undergraduate students.

The Academic Advisor II will empower students to understand the curriculum, navigate university policies, and achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals. This position will use the foundational elements of effective advising to best support students: conceptual (student development and advising theory), informational (knowledge and expertise of the institution), and relational (individualized connection and communication).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Guide assigned students in their academic success from orientation to commencement in general routine issues, collaborating with their supervisor on more complex issues.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across campus, including other advisors, faculty, campus offices, and administrators.

  • Explain, interpret, and apply unit and University policies, procedures, and program requirements.

  • Counsel students in analyzing their unique causes of academic difficulty and recommend typically pre-established guidelines.

  • Empower students to plan their academic program, audit student progress toward degree completion, and certify student degree requirements in assigned program areas.

  • Assist students in the selection of majors and minors appropriate to their interests, backgrounds, and academic qualifications.

  • Utilize advising software to maintain accurate and detailed advising notes, track students, and use data to identify student needs.

  • Assist students in following established procedure for resolving problems requiring action by unit and other university committees.

  • Participate in advising-related outreach and educational presentations to audiences such as prospective students and families, current students, FYE classes, etc.

  • Collaborate with internal partners within to connect students to other professionals for all matters of concern affecting them as students.

  • Respond to unit and UofL initiatives such as enrollment outreach, retention efforts, progress reports, and more.

  • Promote student success for all within UofL’s student population by providing student-centered, highly engaged student contact.

  • Participate in professional development and integrate new or improved knowledge into advising and student success practices.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
