Responsibilities & Qualifications
The Novelis Terre Haute, Indiana, team is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join our team. Reporting to the Associate EMRA, Rolling, this role ensures equipment and processes within the assigned area can sustainably meet plant and customer needs. The Senior Automation Engineer will evaluate new technologies, optimize process controls, lead advanced troubleshooting, and maintain accurate automation software, equipment drawings, system backups, and disaster recovery plans.
Responsibilities
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment and process safety while supporting compliance with federal, state, local, and Novelis requirements.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that improve quality, reliability, efficiency, and cost performance.
- Develop methods and procedures to optimize manufacturing processes and equipment performance.
- Provide advanced troubleshooting support for process and equipment issues involving programmable logic controllers, drives, mill automation systems, motors, power distribution, and other process control equipment.
- Maintain accurate equipment drawings, technical documentation, and system listings that reflect the current configuration of assigned assets.
- Maintain automation software, current system backups, and effective disaster recovery plans.
- Use internal, corporate, and third-party resources to strengthen technical knowledge and improve process performance.
- Support Process Teams in prioritizing and managing improvement activities that align with annual and strategic plans.
- Provide technical leadership for improvement initiatives, including evaluating funding needs and supporting on-time, on-budget completion and sustainable results.
- Provide engineering expertise to the Reliability organization in support of the Facility Reliability Master Plan.
- Collaborate with operators, mechanics, electricians, planners, process leaders, shift specialists, and reliability leaders to improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Assist the Reliability organization with Root Cause Failure Analysis for significant equipment and process failures.
- Assess asset condition, life cycle, and capability to support the plant’s business plan, and recommend appropriate equipment upgrades or replacements.
- Support the capital plan and assigned projects that contribute to the plant’s annual and long-term objectives.
- Prepare technical specifications and facilitate the contractor and supplier bidding process.
- Coach and mentor team members on engineering practices and technical problem-solving.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, controls, automation engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Five to ten years of electrical, controls, or automation engineering experience in a related manufacturing environment.
- Experience troubleshooting equipment and process issues and conducting root-cause analysis, particularly for rolling process control systems.
- Knowledge of rolling theory and process fundamentals, including automatic flatness control, automatic gauge control, measurement systems, and control actuators.
- Experience with Level 2 automation systems, including VME or server-based systems.
- Experience with Level 2 software and programming environments such as Visual Basic, C, LabVIEW, LogicCAD, I/O Works, OpenVMS, or Windows.
- Working knowledge of automation platforms such as AutoMax, Allen-Bradley, Reliance, or Siemens.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, including the ability to make minor drawing updates.
- Understanding of reliability practices, including the development of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for process equipment.
- Experience preparing technical specifications and supporting bids from contractors and suppliers.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to collaborate with employees across different levels of the organization.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lead technical initiatives and build productive working relationships across functions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in electrical, controls, automation engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience with rolling equipment and associated process control systems.
- Experience using advanced engineering and diagnostic tools, including finite element analysis, vibration analysis, lubrication analysis, or fast Fourier transform analysis.
- Experience supporting capital projects, reliability improvements, and process optimization in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience coaching or mentoring others in engineering practices and technical problem-solving.

Location Profile
Novelis’ Terre Haute facility is located in the center of the Wabash Valley about an hour drive from Indianapolis. The region is named for the nearby Wabash River. The facility’s 175 employees produce world-class light gauge aluminum that is used in the production of aluminum foil containers and household foil.
