Backend Engineer (NodeJS)

The Opportunity We're looking for a skilled Backend Engineer (Node.js) to join the Market Innovation team and contribute to the design, development, and deployment of secure, scalable, and high-performance backend platforms supporting NPCI's digital payment ecosystem. The role involves building microservices, APIs, authentication frameworks, simulation platforms, and event-driven systems for products such as UPI, IMPS, BBPS, CBDC, and emerging payment initiatives. You will work closely with Product, Technology, and Innovation teams to deliver highly available and resilient solutions aligned with NPCI standards and nation-scale transaction requirements. Key

Responsibilities Design and develop scalable backend applications using Node.js and TypeScript. Build enterprise-grade REST APIs, microservices, and middleware components. Develop simulation platforms and backend services supporting UPI, IMPS, BBPS, CBDC, and other payment ecosystems. Build transaction simulation, route validation, and response orchestration frameworks for internal testing and innovation initiatives. Implement authentication and authorization mechanisms using OAuth2, JWT, API Keys, token management, and multi-authentication workflows. Design and integrate API gateways, routing, validation, throttling, and security controls. Develop event-driven applications using Apache Kafka for real-time data processing and service communication. Work with Oracle/PostgreSQL databases for schema design, query optimization, and transaction management. Implement caching and performance optimization using Redis and related technologies. Develop containerized applications using Docker and deploy services on Kubernetes platforms. Build and support CI/CD pipelines for automated build, testing, deployment, and release management. Monitor application health, logs, metrics, and distributed traces to ensure platform reliability. Collaborate with Product, Frontend, Security, and Infrastructure teams to deliver production-grade solutions. Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to scalable microservice-based platform design. Ensure compliance with security, governance, observability, and operational standards.

Exposure to observability, monitoring, and distributed tracing platforms. Experience working on large-scale distributed systems processing high transaction volumes. Understanding of API governance and enterprise security frameworks. Experience supporting production systems in 24×7 environments. Exposure to Digital Payments, Banking, FinTech, or Transaction Processing domains. Experience working with nation-scale platforms and real-time transaction ecosystems.
