The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an intergovernmental organisation committed to advancing security of energy supply, economic growth and environmental sustainability through energy policy co-operation. The IEA operates as an autonomous body within the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Both the OECD and the IEA seek opportunities to work with an increasing number of non-members of growing importance to the world economy. The Agency aims to foster the contribution of the energy sector economic development and environmental sustainability.

The IEA seeks to create a talent pool of energy analysts with experience in energy modelling and quantitative analysis to work with the team responsible for the Energy Technology Perspectives report and the State of Energy Innovation to contribute to research, analysis and modelling of regional and sectoral energy technology trends. The successful candidate will have a strong background in energy modelling and quantitative analysis with a focus on one or multiple sectors (transport, buildings, industry, alternative fuels supply, electricity generation). He/she will contribute to the analysis and drafting of IEA flagship and high-profile thematic publications across the whole range of energy technology topics, including but not limited to Energy Technology Perspectives, to the State of Energy Innovation, to sectoral tracking reports (such as the Global EV Outlook and the Global Hydrogen Review) or to special reports and technology roadmaps.

The selected candidates will be part of a team of enthusiastic professionals, reporting to the head of the Technology Innovation Unit, the head of the Hydrogen and Alternative Fuels Unit or the head of the Technology Supply Chains Unit within the Energy Technology Policy Division depending on the specific role.

Main Responsibilities

Energy Analysis and Drafting

  • Assume responsibility for the technology characterization and modelling of one or several sub-sectors within relevant sectoral models of IEA Global Energy and Climate Model. Work closely with other analysts that contribute to the analysis and modelling, ensuring proper teamwork and cooperation.
  • Make significant contributions to quantitative analysis of topical energy technology and innovation issues for inclusion in IEA key publications. Provide intellectual input in developing thought leading analysis of future energy and technology trends.
  • Stay abreast of relevant energy, technology and policy developments in member and non-member countries and with related academic work.
  • Draft reports, working papers, prepare presentations and briefing notes for senior management.

Liaison and Outreach

  • Collaborate with other Directorates in the Agency, the OECD and other national and international organisations, the private sector and research bodies in the analysis of the role of energy technology in Member and non-Member countries.
  • Participate in preparations for meetings of IEA standing committees, working parties and other groups as required; participate in relevant meetings of other international organisations; provide support for the development of reports, analyses and information items for these meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with other IEA divisions, ensuring cross-Agency research and analytical projects that require professional input
  • Maintain contacts with members of national delegations, other international organisations, representatives of private sector, and other institutions involved in energy market assessments.
  • Promote the work of the IEA externally to a wide range of audiences through organising and participating in workshops, making presentations and holding bi-lateral meetings.

Idea Candidate’s profile

Academic Background

  • An advanced university degree(s) in relevant disciplines, such as engineering, mathematics or economics.

Professional Background

  • At least three to seven years' experience in applied economic and policy analysis, preferably within an energy context.
  • Excellent understanding of energy sector dynamics.
  • Excellent quantitative background and experience in the construction and use of large scale energy models and datasets.
  • Proven analytical abilities and excellent writing skills as demonstrated in past work products (analytical reports, quantitative analysis, operative models, and/or published papers).

Tools

  • Excellent command of Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel, Access and Power Query.
  • Knowledge of Python, R, TIMES, Matlab and/or Vensim is an asset.

Languages

  • Fluency in one of the two OECD official languages (English and French) and knowledge of the other, with a commitment to reach a good working level

Core Competencies

Contract Duration

  • A two-year fixed term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Salary Information

  • This position is graded PAL 5. Appointment will be based on the candidate’s level of experience and demonstrated ability to perform the functions at the expected level.
  • Please note that the appointment may be made at a lower grade based on the qualifications and professional experience of the selected applicant.
