We are looking for an Embedded Software Developer to join our team in Ottawa, where you will contribute to the development, testing, and enhancement of software that supports ORBCOMM’s Smart Tracking products. This role is ideal for a developer who enjoys learning new technologies, solving technical challenges, and collaborating closely with experienced engineers in a hands-on environment.

As an Embedded Software Developer reporting to the Director, Modem Software, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of our Smart Tracking applications and embedded software solutions.

Working full-time onsite in Ottawa, you will collaborate with software developers, test engineers, and product teams to design, implement, troubleshoot, and validate software features that drive customer value.

You will have the opportunity to learnspecialized technologies and development environments while receiving mentorship from experienced team members.

What You’ll Do

Software Development & Feature Delivery

• Develop and maintain embedded software components that support Smart Tracking products.
• Learn and apply the Lua programming language to develop and enhance product functionality.
• Implement targeted software features under the guidance of senior team members.
• Translate defined requirements into working software solutions.

Application & System Support

• Become proficient in the Lua software environment and associated development tools.
• Develop terminal applications based on functional requirements.
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve software defects by identifying impacted services and implementing fixes.
• Collaborate with mentors and team members to analyze and address technical issues.

Testing & Quality Assurance

• Learn and utilize the automated regression testing framework.
• Create and maintain automated test cases to support product quality and feature validation.
• Participate in manual and automated testing activities to ensure software reliability and performance.
• Support continuous improvement of testing processes and coverage.

Collaboration & Continuous Learning

• Work closely with software developers, testers, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver product enhancements.
• Participate in code reviews, team discussions, and development planning activities.
• Build knowledge of ORBCOMM products, systems, and development practices through hands-on learning and mentorship.
• Contribute to team objectives supporting delivery of the Smart Tracking application roadmap.

Who You Are

You are a motivated software developer who enjoys learning new technologies, solving technical problems, and contributing to embedded software products in a collaborative team environment.

If you have:

• 3-5 years of experience developing software applications using modern programming languages.
• Knowledge of software development fundamentals, debugging techniques, and troubleshooting methodologies.
• Understanding ofembedded software development principles.
• Experience working in Linux or similar development environments.
• Familiarity with software testing concepts and automated testing practices.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly and apply them effectively.
• Experience with Lua programming is preferred.
• Experience developing terminal or command-line applications is preferred.
• Exposure to regression testing frameworks or automated test development is preferred.
• Experience working on IoT, telecommunications, tracking, or connected-device products is preferred.
• Leverage AI-enabled tools and automation to support daily tasks and productivity.
• Commitment to continuous learning in digital and AI literacy.

The anticipated starting salary range for candidates expressing interest in this position is $85,000 - $95,000 CAD. Actual compensation will depend on factors such as location, technical experience, skills, certifications, etc.
