VoIP / PBX Engineer

About the JobpawaTech is looking for an experienced VoIP / PBX Engineer to take technical ownership of our voice communication infrastructure across multiple African markets.
In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving our existing telephony systems while playing a key role in evaluating, selecting, and implementing a new PBX solution. You will work closely with internal technical teams, local telecom providers, and external vendors to ensure reliable, secure, and scalable voice connectivity across our operations.What You'll Be Doing

• Taking technical ownership of the company’s VoIP and PBX infrastructure across multiple countries;
• Evaluating PBX solutions, comparing vendors, and participating in the selection of a replacement for the existing platform;
• Planning and leading the technical implementation and migration to a new PBX solution, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations;
• Designing, configuring, and maintaining reliable VoIP infrastructure, including PBX platforms, SIP trunks, gateways, and integrations with local telecom providers;
• Working with local IT teams, telecom operators, and external vendors across African markets to establish and maintain reliable voice connectivity;
• Troubleshooting telephony issues, including call routing, registration, connectivity, audio quality, and performance;
• Collaborating with Network, DevOps, and IT Operations teams on connectivity, security, infrastructure, and integration requirements;
• Monitoring voice services, identifying potential risks, and improving reliability and operational visibility;
• Documenting telephony architecture, configurations, operational procedures, and troubleshooting guidelines.

What Makes You a Great Candidate

• 5+ years of experience working with VoIP, PBX, telecommunications, or similar infrastructure;
• Hands-on experience configuring, administering, and troubleshooting PBX systems;
• Good understanding of VoIP technologies and protocols, including SIP, RTP, SRTP, and SIP trunking;
• Experience working with telecom providers, SIP trunks, VoIP gateways, and call routing;
• Understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, NAT, firewalls, VPNs, QoS, and network security concepts, particularly in relation to VoIP services;
• Experience investigating complex telephony issues using logs, network captures, and diagnostic tools;
• Ability to evaluate technical solutions, communicate with vendors, and participate in infrastructure design and migration projects;
• Ability to work independently, take ownership of technical challenges, and collaborate with distributed teams;
• Good communication skills and proficiency in English.

Extra Expertise We Appreciate

• Experience with PBX platforms such as Asterisk, FreeSwitch, 3CX, HoduCC, or similar solutions;
• Experience implementing or migrating cloud-based PBX solutions;
• Familiarity with FortiGate firewalls;
• Experience working with telecommunications providers across multiple countries, particularly in African markets;
• Experience with contact center environments, including call queues, IVR, call recording, and agent management.
