Payroll Manager

The role

Payroll is one of those things that has to be right, every single time. And that’s where you come in.

As our Payroll Manager at Policy Expert, you’ll own our end-to-end payroll operation, making sure our colleagues are paid accurately and on time, every time.

You’ll be the go-to expert for all things payroll, bringing together technical know-how, sharp analytical thinking and a knack for making things work better.

Working closely with Finance and teams across the business, you’ll keep payroll running smoothly, maintain robust controls and ensure we’re always on top of compliance. But this isn’t just about keeping things ticking over. We’re big on finding better ways to do things, and you’ll have the freedom to challenge the status quo, streamline processes and make a genuine impact.

If you love getting the detail right, solving problems and taking ownership, this is your chance to make payroll work smarter.

What you’ll be doing:

Own the Payroll process

  • Take the lead on end-to-end payroll, from gathering and validating data to processing changes and hitting every deadline.
  • Manage new starters, leavers, promotions, salary changes and system updates, keeping records accurate and documentation on point.
  • Work closely with Finance to deliver a seamless, reliable payroll service.

Get pay and benefits right

  • Oversee salary increments, pension contributions, overtime, public holiday pay and other payroll-related calculations.
  • Manage pension uploads, employee payments and related documentation.
  • Be a trusted point of contact for colleagues, providing clear, helpful answers to questions about pay, tax and payroll.

Turn data into insight

  • Deliver accurate weekly, monthly, quarterly and year-end payroll reports.
  • Analyse payroll data, maintain accurate account balances and investigate discrepancies before they become bigger problems.
  • Spot trends, highlight key insights and give the business the information it needs to make informed decisions.

Keep us compliant and in control

  • Ensure payroll processes, records and procedures meet relevant statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Carry out regular checks and audits, support internal and external audit activity, and maintain accurate statutory documentation, including P45s, P60s and P11Ds.
  • Oversee contractor timesheets and related payroll records, always protecting confidential information and managing risk.

Make things better

  • Challenge existing processes and find smarter, more efficient ways of working.
  • Strengthen controls, improve accuracy and build robust procedures that can scale as we grow.
  • Take the initiative, solve problems and turn good ideas into practical improvements.

So, Who are you?

You’re a payroll pro who knows that the details matter. You take pride in getting things right, own your work from start to finish and understand the impact a great payroll operation has on people and the business.

You’re confident working independently, comfortable handling sensitive information and organised enough to juggle competing priorities without losing sight of a deadline. You can dig into the numbers, spot when something doesn’t add up and explain the answer in a way that makes sense to everyone.

You’re also naturally curious. You don’t just follow a process because that’s how it’s always been done. You look for better ways to work, tackle problems head-on and build strong relationships along the way.

In short, you bring the expertise to keep payroll running brilliantly and the mindset to keep making it better.

What you’ll bring:

  • Payroll expertise: Solid experience in payroll management, with a strong understanding of end-to-end payroll processes and requirements.
  • A sharp eye for detail: You’re meticulous with calculations, documentation and data, and you know accuracy is non-negotiable.
  • Technical confidence: You’re comfortable using payroll software, systems and IT tools to manage data and process payroll efficiently.
  • Analytical thinking: You can interpret data, investigate discrepancies, identify trends and turn numbers into useful insight.
  • Reporting know-how: You have experience producing accurate reports and working with business data to support decisions.
  • Organisation and pace: You can manage competing priorities, stay on top of deadlines and maintain high standards in a fast-moving environment.
  • People skills: You communicate clearly, build relationships and work confidently with stakeholders across the business.
  • A problem-solving mindset: You spot opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls and make life easier for everyone.
  • Resilience and discretion: You stay calm under pressure and handle sensitive, time-critical matters with professionalism and integrity.

Ready to make an impact?

We’re looking for someone who can own payroll, raise the bar and help us keep getting better. If that sounds like you, you could be just the person we’re looking for at Policy Expert.
