Job description:
The Schoology Software Engineering team is a group of full stack developers who design, develop, and maintain our products, tools, and infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend services and APIs using PHP (CodeIgniter/Laravel) and Node.js
- Building and enhancing frontend features using React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript
- Developing and operating microservices in a multi-tenant, distributed environment
- Working with MySQL/Aurora, MongoDB, and Redis to design efficient data models and optimize performance
- Deploying, monitoring, and troubleshooting services on AWS, using Docker and Kubernetes
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Using AI Agents, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot to improve development velocity, code quality, and problem solving
- Contributing to system design discussions, proofs of concept, and continuous improvement of engineering practices
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2-5 years of relevant and related work experience.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent, or equivalent years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2-5 years of relevant software engineering experience.
- Strong backend development experience with PHP, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js.
- Experience building microservices and APIs in multi-tenant environments, with an understanding of distributed systems, software design principles and patterns.
- Experience with MySQL/Aurora, MongoDB, and Redis.
- Good to have experience with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS services, and CI/CD pipelines, including build and deployment processes.
- Experience building prototypes and proof-of-concepts (PoCs).
- Hands-on experience with AI agents and AI-powered development tools such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot.

- Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Clear communication with engineers and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong ownership mindset and collaboration skills
