Redwood Materials is a circular economy and battery recycling company focused on creating a closed-loop supply chain for electric vehicles and clean energy storage. Founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel, the firm recovers critical metals like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper from used electronics and manufacturing scrap to produce high-performance battery components domestically. By recycling and remanufacturing these materials, it aims to lower the environmental impact and cost of batteries while strengthening North American supply chains.

About Redwood Materials

Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Solutions Engineer, Energy Storage

As a Solutions Engineer you will serve as a technical voice with Redwood’s energy storage customers. This role bridges commercial and engineering: the Solutions Engineer represents Redwood’s technical capabilities directly in customer conversations. The ideal candidate has a background in design or applications engineering and is eager to bring that expertise closer to the customer, helping Redwood’s commercial team operate with greater technical independence as the business scales.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Serve as a technical resource in customer conversations including on-site visits and technical feasibility discussions
  • Work directly with customers on initial system design concepts, site integration requirements, and project scoping, translating their needs into actionable technical specifications and clear project expectations.
  • Support commercial proposal development including Single-Line Diagrams (SLDs), system layout concepts, technical specifications, and inputs to pricing and capacity models.
  • Build and maintain deep expertise in Redwood’s energy storage products - battery chemistry, pack configurations, system architecture, degradation characteristics, and performance parameters - and serve as the go-to technical resource for the commercial team.
  • Partner with engineering teams to surface customer feedback, flag capability gaps, and inform the development roadmap based on field learnings and evolving customer needs.
  • Enable the commercial team to operate independently on technical matters, reducing reliance on core engineering for routine customer questions and design decisions as Redwood scales.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on, “get it done” mindset - willing to travel to a customer site, roll up your sleeves, and figure out what’s needed
  • Ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy and make well-reasoned technology and product decisions without frequent guidance from engineering leadership.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of time
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work well cross-functionally but also to represent Redwood’s technical capabilities credibly to external customers and translate complex concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
