Rio Tinto is a mining group founded in 1873 when investors bought a copper mine in southern Spain, and it now operates as a dual-listed company with corporate offices in London and Melbourne. Its largest business by far is iron ore from the Pilbara region of Western Australia, an integrated system of mines, rail and ports that supplies Chinese steelmaking, followed by aluminium, copper from Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia and Kennecott in Utah, and industrial minerals including borates and titanium dioxide. The group has moved into battery materials through lithium assets in Argentina and the acquisition of Arcadium, while working to decarbonise aluminium smelting.
  • Lead mobile equipment maintenance at Gudai-Darri, our most technologically advanced iron ore mine, with a strong focus on safe, reliable asset performance.
  • Shape a people-centred maintenance culture, coach frontline leaders and influence continuous improvement across a technology-advanced operation.
  • FIFO from Perth, Western Australia on a 5:2/4:3 roster, with ad hoc 9:5 coverage to support weekend requirements.

We’re Finding Better Ways™ to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values - care, courage and curiosity - guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the role

We are looking for a Manager, Mobile Equipment Maintenance to lead the mobile equipment maintenance team at Gudai-Darri and help deliver safe, reliable and efficient asset performance.

In this role, you’ll lead people and maintenance outcomes across a technology-advanced operation, working closely with operational teams, functional support teams and original equipment manufacturers.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced asset management or maintenance optimisation leader who enjoys developing people, improving how work is delivered and creating a culture of care, connection and trust.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Site General Manager and working in a challenging and exciting operational environment within the Gudai-Darri leadership team, you will be:

  • Foster a safety and performance-focused culture that supports the wellbeing of the mobile equipment maintenance team.
  • Lead, coach and develop maintenance leaders and team members to build capability, engagement and accountability.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying, evaluating and implementing opportunities that improve maintenance efficiency, reliability and safety.
  • Ensure core asset management and maintenance processes are applied to support reliable equipment performance across the asset lifecycle.
  • Assess and manage maintenance and asset risks, including assurance activities across the asset lifecycle.
  • Oversee large-scale maintenance work, including planning, scheduling, budget management and contractor performance.
  • Build effective working relationships across operational and functional support teams and with original equipment manufacturers.
  • Act as an alternate Site Senior Executive under the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022, with the function described in Schedule 26.

About you

We’re looking for someone whose experience aligns with the key requirements below. You do not need to meet every “helpful for success” item to apply; if you bring relevant experience and are excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to submit an application.

Required for Success

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • Proven capability to coach frontline leaders in safety tools and practices and lead teams in a large-scale operational maintenance environment.
  • Strong experience in asset management and/or maintenance optimisation, including responsibility for large-scale maintenance work, planning and scheduling, and budget management.
  • Practical experience managing contractors in an operational environment.
  • A current C Class manual driver’s licence.
  • A track record of values-led leadership, with care, courage and curiosity reflected in how you lead people, manage risk and work across operational boundaries.

Helpful for Success

  • Experience leading maintenance for heavy mobile equipment, or leadership experience gained in another complex operational maintenance environment.

What we offer

Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you’ve helped the world progress.

  • A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
  • A permanent position working directly for Rio Tinto
  • A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with annual incentive program
  • Comprehensive medical benefits including subsidised private health insurance for employees and immediate family
  • Attractive share ownership plan
  • Company provided insurance cover
  • Extensive salary sacrifice & salary packaging options
  • Career development & education assistance to further your technical or leadership ambitions
  • Ongoing access to family-friendly health and medical wellbeing support
  • Leave for all of life’s reasons (vacation/annual, paid parental, personal & cultural leave)
  • Exclusive employee discounts (banking, accommodation, cars, retail and more)

Where you’ll be working

For over 150 years, we have been producing materials essential to human progress - minerals and metals that are still part of everyday life, including the iron ore that shapes the skylines of cities around the world.

Next comes Gudai-Darri, a place that brings together everything we have learned to create a technically advanced iron ore mine - a new mine for a new way of working.

This is your opportunity to be at the pioneering edge of mining.

At Gudai-Darri your voice matters. We are building a new generation mine with a family of talented people at its heart..

Applications close on 23rd of October 2026 (Rio Tinto reserves the right to remove advertised roles prior to this date).
