Overview
Rio Tinto is a mining group founded in 1873 when investors bought a copper mine in southern Spain, and it now operates as a dual-listed company with corporate offices in London and Melbourne. Its largest business by far is iron ore from the Pilbara region of Western Australia, an integrated system of mines, rail and ports that supplies Chinese steelmaking, followed by aluminium, copper from Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia and Kennecott in Utah, and industrial minerals including borates and titanium dioxide. The group has moved into battery materials through lithium assets in Argentina and the acquisition of Arcadium, while working to decarbonise aluminium smelting.
