Rolls-Royce SMR is a British nuclear technology company developing a small modular reactor, a factory-built pressurised water reactor plant of about 470 megawatts, from its headquarters in Derby, England. Majority-owned by Rolls-Royce with investors including Qatar Investment Authority and the Czech utility CEZ, it was selected in 2025 by Great British Energy - Nuclear as the preferred technology for the first UK SMR programme and runs offices in Derby, Manchester and Warrington. It hires control and instrumentation engineers, civil and structural engineers, project, commercial and construction managers, radiological protection specialists, buyers and industrialisation leads.

Rolls Royce SMR is on a mission to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. As the leading Small Modular Reactor programme in Europe, we’re building a British solution to a global energy challenge and shaping one of the country’s most significant green export opportunities.

The appointment of a SeniorWelding Engineer/Technician is a pivotal point in our growth and in developing, implementing and qualifying high-integrity welding solutions for nuclear power plant pipework and components. The role also acts as a technical advisor, partnering with Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, suppliers and other stakeholders to deliver robust welding strategies... at scale! This will include:

  • Develop and qualify welding techniques for high-integrity nuclear pipework.
  • Define and support welding strategy across Rolls-Royce SMR manufacturing and supply chain activities.
  • Lead welding process qualification activities, including pWPS, PQR and supporting documentation in accordance with ASME III and IX.
  • Assess welding process robustness, repeatability and long-term performance.
  • Support standardisation of designs to facilitate efficient manufacture.
  • Provide expert technical guidance to engineering, manufacturing and commissioning teams.
  • Work closely with regulators, suppliers and external partnes.
  • Support implementation of welding processes across the SMR programme.

We seek an influential and resilient individual who must have significant experience developing, qualifying and justifying welding techniques for high-integrity pipework and we will need your application to showcase your experience and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Experience managing welding process qualifications and associated documentation, particularly mechanised orbital GTAW.
  • Background in operational welding environments within Nuclear, Power Generation and/or Oil & Gas sectors.
  • Professional welding qualifications are highly beneficial (e.g. International Institute of Welding (IIW) / European Welding Federation (EWF) Welding Engineer/Technologist/Specialist status or CSWIP Senior/Welding Inspector
  • Experience working with safety-critical products and enhanced quality controls.
  • Proven capability to plan, manage and deliver technical work packages.
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams, suppliers and external partners.
