We're looking for a Systems Engineer to support the Agency’s enterprise monitoring environment, ensuring all systems, applications, and infrastructure are accurately tracked, properly configured, and proactively observed. Systems Engineer works closely with support teams and change control boards to maintain relevant monitoring coverage, tune alerts, and strengthen operational readiness. The position drives continuous improvement by optimizing monitoring tools, closing visibility gaps, and producing dashboards, reports, and integrations that enhance both proactive detection and reactive response.

  • Establish, maintain, and automate monitoring configurations, alerting rules, and service checks based on approved business logic and operational requirements.
  • Continuously evaluate monitoring thresholds, alert conditions, and event correlation rules to ensure alerts are meaningful, actionable, and aligned with operational priorities.

Operational Monitoring Quality & Optimization

  • Review alerts, events, and notifications across all monitoring platforms to identify noise, gaps, or misconfigurations and implement improvements.
  • Maintain and regularly update the list of nodes requiring after-hours support, including escalation paths and contact procedures.
  • Collaborate with system owners to validate functional checks performed by the monitoring team, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and operational value.
  • Identify and close gaps in monitoring coverage to improve proactive detection of issues and enhance the speed and reliability of reactive response.

Visualization, Reporting & Documentation

  • Create, update, and manage detailed diagrams, dashboards, topology maps, and availability views within monitoring tools for enterprise-wide and system-specific visibility.
  • Develop, modify, and maintain monitoring reports to capture key performance metrics, trends, and operational insights.
  • Support audit preparation and responses by collaborating with the BPA Call SACOR and designated stakeholders to ensure monitoring tools meet compliance requirements.

Integration & Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with support teams across the Agency and divisions to ensure monitoring configurations reflect current operational needs.
  • Support integrations between monitoring tools and other enterprise applications, ensuring data accuracy, interoperability, and reliability.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise on monitoring best practices, tool capabilities, and operational improvements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree and 5 tears of relevant experience
  • Strong understanding of enterprise monitoring platforms (e.g., WhatsUp Gold, OpManager, Splunk, Cisco Catalyst Center, or similar).
  • Experience with alert tuning, event correlation, automated service checks, and monitoring configuration management.
  • Familiarity with change management processes and ITIL-aligned operational practices.
  • Ability to create dashboards, diagrams, and visualizations that communicate system health and performance.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with system owners, support teams, and audit stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting monitoring integrations via APIs, SNMP, syslog, or other data ingestion methods.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on proactive detection and rapid response.
