About our group:
Bring your research mindset to real engineering challenges in advanced recording head technology at Seagate. Our Characterization and Analytic Group (CAG) supports recording head development. Within CAG, the Mechanical Electrical Integration (MechEI) team in Teparuk, Thailand, explores how mechanical and electrical behavior at the recording head (transducer) level influences product performance.
We turn experimental data into insights that help recording head designers improve future designs. As an intern, you will connect your academic knowledge with practical engineering applications, develop analysis and automation methods, and collaborate with operations teams, test developers, and recording head designers in Thailand and the USA.
About the role - you will:
- Explore TGA/HGA engineering datasets, including frequency response functions (FRF), shape/profile measurements, and other mechanical and electrical parameters.
- Identify patterns, normal behavior, and variation to understand what engineering data reveals about system performance.
- Develop data-driven, statistically supported criteria to detect and flag unusual behavior, making evaluation more consistent and less dependent on visual inspection.
- Investigate unusual signatures using failure analysis and data correlation to identify potential key process input variables (KPIVs) and contributing mechanisms.
- Apply and deepen your knowledge of statistical and engineering methods, such as correlation, regression, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance (ANOVA), multivariate analysis, and Design of Experiments (DOE), as appropriate to the problem.
- Build quantitative models and transfer functions linking key process input variables (KPIVs) to key process output variables (KPOVs), helping explain how inputs affect engineering outcomes.
- Test your models across different conditions and datasets to understand their reliability, robustness, and limitations.
- Help turn your findings into standardized analysis methods, abnormality criteria, and practical evaluation guidelines the wider team can use.
- Create scripts and tools that automate repetitive data processing, visualization, and analysis using Python, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab, or equivalent analytical tools.
- Share your methods, findings, and recommendations through clear documentation and technical discussions with cross-functional engineering teams.
About you:
You are curious about how physical systems work and enjoy using data to explore questions and test ideas. You want to apply your academic knowledge to practical engineering challenges while learning new tools and working with others. You bring:
- Curiosity, a willingness to learn, and confidence to ask questions
- Logical thinking and a structured approach to problem-solving
- An interest in mechanical dynamics and vibration
- Openness to feedback and a collaborative approach to learning and teamwork
- A willingness to share ideas and collaborate in a diverse, international engineering environment
Your experience includes:
- Current enrollment in a master’s or PhD program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, or a related field
- Basic programming experience in Python, C, or a similar language, gained through coursework, research, or projects
- Familiarity with working with data using Excel, JMP, SQL, or equivalent tools
Helpful, but not required:
- Exposure through coursework, research, or projects to mechanical or electromechanical test data, such asvibration, frequency response, or surface topography
- Experience creating scripts, automating analysis, or developing toolsfor engineering applications
- Ability to communicate in English for technical discussions and collaboration
- Interest in recording head technology, precision mechanics, or advanced hardware systems
Location:
Our Teparuk site specializes in producing nano-recording heads-a crucial component for the read/write functionality of hard disk drives. At our Teparuk facility, work is both productive and enjoyable. You and your colleagues can grab breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks at our 24/7 on-site canteen and coffee shop. Stay active by taking a few laps around our running track or participating in volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton, or football at our on-site gymnasium and fitness center. We also offer a variety of activities, including music, dance, and aerobic classes. Alternatively, unwind in our lush green areas. Consider joining any of our employee resource groups (ERGs), such as Seagate Women in Leadership Network (SWLN), Seagate PRIDE: Thailand chapter, or Seagate’s parents and caregivers group. These ERGs provide educational and fun activities. Additionally, enjoy on-site festivals, celebrations, and opportunities to give back to the local community.
