Shape your future with a career at Shell Energy.

Shell Energy combines deep expertise and true innovation to help our electricity and gas customers navigate a rapidly changing market. We’re seeking people who bring the drive to succeed in providing the energy businesses and households need for today and tomorrow.

We’re seeking a Data Scientist to join our high-performing Digital & Technology Solutions team in Melbourne.

Reporting to the Lead Data Scientist, this role is responsible for building and maintaining data science-based products that support Shell Energy’s strategy and objectives, improve operational efficiency and drive business growth. You’ll be instrumental in delivering analytics-driven solutions, developing predictive models and supporting data science products that enhance decision-making across the business.

With respect, integrity and honesty, responsibilities include:

  • Develop, deploy and maintain data science-based products that support Shell Energy’s strategic objectives and business performance.
  • Design and implement advanced analytics and machine learning models to solve complex business problems, including customer churn prediction, load behaviour analysis, forecasting, demand response analysis and energy optimisation.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into practical, data-driven solutions.
  • Apply DevOps principles to support the ongoing operation, maintenance and continuous improvement of data science products and services.
  • Participate in product support activities, including troubleshooting and remediation of technical issues to maintain service quality and reliability.
  • Collaborate with data engineers, analysts and broader technology teams to ensure effective delivery of scalable and robust analytics solutions.
  • Monitor, evaluate and improve the performance of models and analytical solutions, ensuring outputs remain accurate and fit for purpose.
  • Contribute to the development of best practices, standards and processes that support data science capability across the organisation.
  • Communicate insights and recommendations effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, supporting informed business decision-making.

Here’s what you’ll need to thrive in this role:

  • Tertiary qualification in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and deploying data science, machine learning and advanced analytics solutions in a commercial environment.
  • Excellent programming skills in relevant data science technologies and tools, with experience working across the end-to-end model development lifecycle.
  • Experience applying statistical analysis, predictive modelling and machine learning techniques to solve complex business problems.
  • Knowledge of forecasting, optimisation and behavioural analytics methodologies, ideally within energy, utilities or related industries.
  • Experience working within DevOps environments and supporting products through ongoing maintenance and continuous improvement activities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable business insights.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and business teams.
  • A commitment to continuous learning, innovation and delivery of high-quality outcomes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in the energy industry, including electricity markets, customer analytics or energy optimisation, would be advantageous.
